Are Scoobs REALLY thirsty?

This isn't just another one of those my car does this mpg, what does yours do etc.
It seems to me that Scoobs are quite thirsty and I wondered if so why.
I've dug out a copy of a recent Autocar to get some figures for comparison purposes, it seems to suggest they
Audi TT (225 bhp) Test 22 mpg Touring 30mpg
BMW 328 Test 24 mpg Touring 28mpg
MY01 Test 19 mpg Touring 24mpg
I agree that my comparison is very crude, but ir does seem to show that the Germans are better at engine efficecy

170miles per tank but the tank only cost 30£

I get about 30mpg out of mine, thats up and down the M6 every day( which means I'm probably averaging 5mph!).
Being serious though that is a combination of rather rapid motorway driving, steady A road driving and very slow stop-start crawling in traffic. Don't get the chance to use the turbo much which is why my mpg isn't too bad.
Standard uk spec 97.

Best I've had from my Sport is about 31/32, even on long dual carriageway runs. Normally its between 28/30. DOubt if I'd get more than 32 ish.
I had a 2 litre XR4x4 Sierra before the Scoob and the best I had from that was around the 34 mark on motorways, at sensible pace. I'd say the Sierra was better on mpg. Circa 100k miles on the clock of each car.

Hi, I got a 94 WRX and im getting about 20mpg which im not happy with but hearing what everyone else gets it aint to bad, mind you i do boot it and my turbo comes in quick.

I thought it was to do with the Fuel mapping on the Scooby.
I have been told, not sure how true it is right enough, no doubt someone will get all techy on us but "After 3/4 of the rev range (approx) the fuel system goes into full dump. ie- not bothering to sensor / measure the quantity of fuel delivered as once you reach a certain point you take all the gas you can get".
as long as mine works, I dont care how.
as for fuel economy figures?, who gives a toss, the scoobs are addictive, and once you get into it, you cant stop.

Hi a question for you? Does anyone no how much fuel is left in the car when it reaches the last line before the all out of petrol line, or do you get some sort of notification like a bleep or light. I dont run mine that low. can anyone answer that?

At the middle bar of the E I get approx 53 litres in.
Got 58 in once (60 litre tank) which was a tad close I think
MPG = low 20s normally, high 20s on a long sensible run, under 20 though on a sustained - oh my god this is fun - type drive

The buggers use petrol to cool the pistons. Pistons get hotter in these Turbo engines, tempting fuel pre-detonation (pinking luvvie) so a bit of excess fuel cools 'em down a bit.
Personally i'd prefer water injection and about 44 mpg mind...

getting around 16mpg from my MY01- mostly around town and commuting- not too disappointed.
TKH reckons on about 6-8mpg on a track day in his 99 STi5 RA.

95WRX - I took the scoob on a long run down the country - 200 miles at X-mas - with no delays travelling at steady 70 - 100 the whole way and averaged 26MPG which is the best ive ever had - round town more like 18 and normally 20 or so - allways cr&p - but allways so much fun!!!

Be thankful turbo owners, I'm getting around 27mpg from a 1.6GL - that's 88bhp everyone!! Cannot figure out why, it improves by 1mpg if I use the feather touch on the loud pedal, hard to bare for a 17y.o. 
Do all (newish) Audi Quattros have pretend 4x4 then?

Average 26 mpg, but commute is at 50-80 most of the way due to heavy, but flowing traffic. But then there's the 8 roundabouts on the bypass after I've come off the motorway to use up all the petrol I've saved

It's only the Golf floorpan-based Audis that have a 'part-time' 4WD system. For example, the A3 Quattro, S3 and TT use front wheel drive until the system detects slippage at the front end. Then the power is automatically transferred via a Haldex clutch towards the rear.
The A4, A6 and A8 Quattros all us the traditional Audi full time system. Ineterestingly, the Skoda Octavia 4X4 uses the Golf system as well. Therefore, the Czechs can justifiably claim to use the same chassis as the Audi TT!

As far as I am aware the TT only brings the rear diff into play when you've totally smoked the front tyres.

Oh yeah, I once got my old 2.8 XR4x4 down to 12mpg at 85mph with a MkII Escort rally car on a trailer on the back, and I could still waste a Max Powa Nova from a set of lights.
