What can I get for 11k and is PPP worth it?
Hi guys, I am still on the hunt for what will be my first scooby. I have about 11k to spend and have been looking at a few Bugeye STis. I am after a low spoiler version (non prodrive styled) and have seen a few but none to the standard I want. Firstly is 11k a realistic budget to get a good (ie mint) low mileage bugeye STi? I have seen the odd blob eye sti for this price but they have all had mega mileages so is bug eye the way to go?
Also I have driven only one PPP equipped car and was very impressed but was unable to drive it back to back with a standard STi. Should I hold out for a PPP version or in your experience is a standard STi still fun in the real world?

PPP is mainly about better performance and retaining warranty IMHO
if you have no warranty issues "£ per bhp" better to get a Non PPP STi get it remapped, Fuel pump and exhaust.

In your opinion a non PPP STi is not that good? Apart from bhp what does the PPP really offer over a standard STi? Surely handling is the same?
If I did get a non PPP STI whoeasy (ie expensive) is it to get it to PPP type figures?

thanks for that link but I do know that I want an STi. I drove a WRX PPP and a standard STi and preferred the STI hands down. What I am in two minds about is whether to hold out for a rare STi PPP. Is the extra power worth it in real world driving and if it is can I get to similar power starting with an STI without breaking the bank?

STi PPP are rare ? The 'Prodrive Editions' are in limited numbers but not really worth seeking out unless you are keen on the looks, (they are nice looking!)
Ordinary STi's with PPP are great but at the age you are looking it depends on price as to which you go for. A mint example of either are worth buying, and for around £1000 you could replicate/exceed the PPP on a basic STi with new parts.

To be honest mate, i would rather have a classic sti v5/6 and spend the remaining on tuning or just get a p1, i think the classic is a much better car to drive and feels more solid!

Rare may have been the wrong word, but non Prodrive styled bugeye STIs with a PPP are a little thin on the ground. As I am looking for an older car there are less good ones to choose from. So I suppose main point of my question was whether I should buy a mint STi or wait for a PPP. But if PPP power can be got easily I may as well go for the best STI I can find and use this as a base if I decide on upping power later.
Sorry waffled on, forgive me I am a newbie!! I basically don't want to buy an STI and then find upgrading the power is difficult and I should have got a PPP. From what has been said it seems an STI is a good basis reagrdless of whether it has a PPP.

I used the same mods on both my WRX and STi and had them remapped. I took them off the WRX when I sold it and put them straight on the STi.
The results are considerably more in the STI but even in the WRX it exceeds the PPP offering. Have a look at my scooby for mods, they are all applicable to tuning a Bug STi

Is it possible to take an STI bugeye to 300ish bhp for under £1000 and still keep it reliable and driveable?

I didn't buy cheap and all parts were brand new. You could make savings if you look around and choose wisely, I also made a few savings through group buys.
H&S 100 cell Sports Cat - £500 - Fitted
H&S Straight Centre and Decat - £175 Fitted
Plugs and Pump - £150 Fitted
Mocom Remap - £400
Panel Filter - £50 - fit yourself
Total is Approx £1300 but the Sports cat is available far cheaper.
If you went for a ninja Sports cat at £299 and didn't bother changing the silenced centre you would be bang on £1000 and well in the +/- 300bhp range.

A non PPP car would be the way I would go. PPP is great under warranty but you can get much more for your money if you go to one of the aftermarket specialists.
If you buy a PPP and feel the need for more power at some point in the future (it will happen ) you'll end up ditching most of the PPP parts which is a bit wasteful.
Also PPP uses a generic map rather than custom so by going the ecutek, exhaust and pump route you should end up with a better setup.
Yes 300bhp is achievable for a grand, but I wouldn't worry too much about the numbers. A decent mapper will give you a car that feels great to drive and thats got to be the main aim.

hello mate, was gonna bend your ear about all this at the gym tonight. As you can tell I'm undecided about a PPP car and was seeking advice. The one I drove the other week was great (but rubbish overall) and I've found a nice non PPP I may look at but was wondering if I'd regret not getting a PPP to start with. Overall view seems to be go for best car I can find and if I decide I want more power I can easily get it at a later stage.

just one thing if you have not already go and try as said earlier a v5 or v6 sti even better the type r and with the remaining cash you can spend on mods! if you are looking fo something a little more try a p1 they are great cars and within your budget, imo i have owned a p1 and driven a few 04/05 sti's and a wr1 the classic impreza imo are more fun to drive and feel rawer (if that is a word lol) at the end of the day it is down to you and what you prefer to drive but i think untill i can afford a litchfield t-25 i wil stay with the classic's

James, I have a non-PPP bug-eye STI, the one you don't want....
For similar money mine's ended up at 340 bhp (+40 over PPP).
Easy choice, PPP when new equals warranty, second-hand, not relevant, no warranty left now... advise a catted down-pipe for easy MOT's anywhere !

Re-mapped car pulls better from low revs, and 6K to 8K the thing just pulls like crazy, as standard they get a bit breathless over 6000 rpm...
