that is the rumour from the last budget apparently....For those of you with pre-march 06 registered subarus i wudnt worry, they were specifically talking about new cars in the high band post march 06 that this would apply too. Too much of a vote loser applying it to all cars bless, so just clobber the well to do for now

It'll be interesting to see if they do it & if anyone takes them to court over de-valuing peoples cars.

I certainly think it goes far beyond a wind-up.
It was quite well reported at the time about 8 months ago.
Will hit a few cars, but the new WRX and STi stand out as particularly vulnerable to a £1000 a year Car Tax bill. Add the Insurance and petrol consumption and the fact that an Impreza is no longer in high demand and the sad fact is that values will take a massive hit.

I don't think there is a definate decision on the £1000 tax it was mentioned in all the speel coming out of the press etc, but the tax is going to go to £400 next year for those cars reged after March 06 {think it may be the 23rd}and in band g {as said above }

I've seen & heard a few rumours as well of the road tax for the highest band cars going up as well. Probably as stated in stages and I cant see the next goverment ever reducing it either !
Have to admit its one of the reasons why my next car wont be a Subaru ! Because I refuse to pay £1000 road tax a year !

^^ What will happen though fella? Will it be the end of ownership of "performance" cars for those of us on "normal" salaries? Will it force us back in to older cars that pre-date Mar 2006? Will the Govt face poll tax type riots when we've (the motorist) all had enough? Interesting times ahead!

can the goverment afford to do this?
Don't forget if we all stopped buying fuel tomorrow the economy would collapse, the whole enviro bullsh!t is a smokescreen to make more money.

Im not well to do before you say anything i've just saved to buy the car i liked.
It looks like we'll all be goin back to the 80's and drivin METRO'S!! if the government get their way
I still want to know how does increasing car tax sort out the icebergs, ozone layer and what ever else they make up to rip us off

It wont help one bit. Thats the point!!! They just want to make more money off us. If we all stopped using cars and buying fuel then income tax would have to go up 10fold to make up for the shortfall.
Its liberal lefties who cant stand the fact that some of us can afford bigger (and better) cars than they can. Theyd have us all driving round in G-Whizz heaps of $hit if they had their way.
We are not all equal and i'd buy the biggest, most polluting 4x4 i could and would happily pay the £1000 tax just to pi$$ people off!!

If you pollute more you pay more - it will seem very fair to the average man-in-the-street with his family car. He will not bat an eyelid if we are hit by a £1000/Year Car Tax bill - and I can assure you, it will happen.
Are the big 4x4 drivers Labour voters, generally? NO.
Do the pikeys pay any car tax anyway? NO.
Does the sight of an Impreza whizzing along annoy people? YES.
Will the Government lose any sleep over the 'few' paying £1000? NO.
I can also see a prison sentence for the Cat-Free owners too ... it's not like we 'accidently' remove our CAT - so, it is a crime committed in full knowledge that it is illegal. There will be no sympathy from joe-public on that either.
Performance driving is at an end, to save the planet for those who come after us - in the true Xmas spirit of things.

How many cars fall foul of the 225 ceiling though? Must be a fairly high %age of the driving population? Certainly all performance cars will be hit by it. As noted above, the Govt usually sneak this sort of thing in on the minority then after a while start widening it out to the majority. Most will get caught up in it eventually

I think you'll find that post 2001 Ford Mondeos fall into a fairly high tax bracket. Are they not a common family car??
