Default Green E symbol

Okay this might well be a very dumb question but no one seems to know.

What does the swirling white "e" on a green background mean generally stuck on the boot lid of newer cars. At first I thought it meant hybrid or duel fuel but this does not seem to be the case. Is it denoting the car is compostable or what?
