D'oh! Am I the only one this stupid?

Please reassure me! (vain hope, I'm going to get the pi$$ taken, I know...)
Am I the only person who forgot to get an MOT the day the car reached 3 years old? No reminder from the DVLA (although they're pretty quick to point out when your tax is due...) and I've only just realised.
This probably means I've not been insured etc for a couple of months now, which is pretty bloody scary.
Booked in at 1pm today, *phew*. If your car is an "R", get it done now!

I was working too - at least I've got the next two days off.
Well, I got the MOT today. Managed to find a Kwik Fit with a free slot, and that was an experience I can tell you
KF - "Your emissions are OK, but it sounds like you have a misfire"
Me - "No, they all sound like that"
KF - (immediately after idling the engine for 5 mins) "Do you have any top-up oil - your level is really low"
Me - "Leave it few minutes and check again"
KF - (15 mins later) "Oh, its fine" (By the way, KF don't actually stock oil good enough to go in a Scooby - so don't ask them to do an oil service for you!)
KW - (After giving up trying to make the car run on *one* pair of rollers) "Does this have permanent four wheel drive?"
Me - "Er...yes" (Did he have his eyes shut when looking underneath?)
They also lifted the back of the car by putting the jack under the rear diff instead of on the body jacking points - is this standard practice??
Anything past a Fiesta and they're stumped - and this was the MOT inspector, not the YTS fitter! I won't be going back there in a hurry.

I too forgot the MOT and drove around for a few months without one....I thought the SVA sorted that but obviously it didn't!!!
A friendly remider from a local bobby "and i'm sure your MOT is up to date" on a random police stop woke me up!!!
It would be worth putting together some sort of fact sheet for Imported cars?? Maybee add it to the SIDC FAQ too??

Oh my God ! thanks for posting this.
My car's an R and was purchased on 28th Feb 98 so I always thought I had until 28th Feb 2001 to get the MOT done ?
Have I got this wrong ? Should I be booking it for an MOT now !

Millband : I wouldn't let Kwik Fit anywhere near my Subaru !
God knows how much damage they've caused to the centre diff by attempting to run it on the rollers plus they could have damaged the rear diff by jacking it up.
I'd get it checked out by the experts (Scoobysport ?) to make sure everythings ok.
Most MOT stations don't have 4WD brake-testing facilities - you must insist on a road test instead - I believe this is allowable for the MOT.

Yeah, been there , done that.
About 12 years ago, got stopped for speeding in XR2. Copper pointed out I should have had an MOT 3 months previously. Whoops sorry, let me off for speeding but gave me fine and 3 points for no MOT.

Cheers Guys, makes me feel better!
Gary F - Mine was first registerd end Sept 97, so MOT was due Sept 00!
Kevin G - I was desperate! Had to do 500 miles+ to visit family over last 3 days, and did not want to risk points for something as dimwitted as this.
I'll get it all checked out by the dealer at the next service, but I reckon the centre diff will be fine - I think only sudden large inputs (such as high-speed handbrake turn?) would be enough to do damage IMHO, and he didn't push it hard on the rollers. Using power on snow/ice would do as much damge otherwise.
To be honest I think the rear-diff casing will be fine too, but I wish I'd made more fuss about that at the time.
Cheers,
Steve

Interesting stuff. I've been going through something very similar with my 98 WRX, albeit prompted by a thing from the DVLA telling me I'd need to supply my MOT certificate to renew my tax despite the fact that the tax runs from 31st Dec 2000 before my car is three years old. The postoffice actually agreed with me and gave me a new tax disc without asking to see an MOT certificate, but it did prompt me to do some research in this area.
I came across a document V112 on the DVLA site (http://www.dvla.gov.uk/forms/pdf/v112online.pdf) which states the following for imported cars...
Note: Because it is impossible to discover the precise date of construction the date of manufacture is always taken to be the last fay of the year in which a vehicle was constructed. The vehicle's first annual MOT test will be due at the end of the third year from its date of manufacture.
It seems to me that if you can make a reasonable case for the car being manufactured in 98 (which can't be far off if it is a 98MY) then you may be able to delay the MOT until the end of 2001.
I'd be interested in people's thoughts on this...
