Default good first car????

my little brother is 22 this year, he has been on motorcycles since he was 16, now he is wanting to do his car test.

got some quotes for him today, he likes my wifes scooby, so i was thinking a 1.6 gl would be a pretty cool first car for him

opinions?

i was 21 when i passed my test, and had a 2.0 sport as my first car. tesco insured me on it for £1500 which was bloody good considering it was group 13.

1.4 Lupo..........well that's what I got last Year for the Wife! No performance as such but it is a doodle to drive and has a good feel factor with rugged VW build quality. SEAT/VW both used the same basic car, the SEAT Arosa looks more funky but is the same basic car as far as I know! Road Tax 110 Quid too......

IMO, i would never buy an Impreza without a turbo. They are dog slow and will have their **** handed to them by Fiestas/Clios etc. If he just wan't the Scooby look then i say go for it however. Are the 1.6 gl's awd???? If they are then i wouldn't expect the fuel consumption to be upto much - sommat to consider.
BTW, before anyone jumps on my comments - i ain't a Scooby snob cos i haven't got one anymore , but i have plenty of experience of driving none turbo Scoobs, which makes me a realist withsome experience

I thought pretty much all Subarus were AWD?
I could, as ever, be awesomely wrong on that though.

Yeah little VW's are pretty decent cars, a 1.6 mkiv golf or something would be pretty decent as well as the Lupos and Polos.

Also kinda depends on budget I guess. How much cash is there to play with?

The 1.6's will be 2WD.
Will be a bit sluggish, but probably no worse than any other similar 1.6 litre car and they are fairly solid and reliable.

If he can stretch to a one of the 124bhp 2.0 Sports then they are not a bad little car at all. Very safe and forgiving handling too for a new driver which means that if he overdoes it into corners he stand some chance of staying on the road. Mind you I would imagine insurance for a new driver on a 2.0 car is going to be a bit steep.
