Hi guys,

First post on scoobynet.

I'm wanting to buy a scooby and have sorted out some finance. I have £10-12k to spend. But i do have 2 limiting factors. It must be less than 10 years old and can't be higher than insurance group 18.

Are there any of the turbo scooby's that come into this category? I really like the UK300 edition.

UK turbo 2000 classic is the only scoob in insurance group 17!

Thats as far as i know anyway! The other two limiting factors you have arent a problem! Youll get a well nice scoob for 10k!!

most if not all impreza turbo's are group 20 insurance, there shouldn't be much difference between the 2 insurance groups,
i have one for sale... 2002 sti type uk £9995, 265bhp, group 20 though

you'd get an absolutly mint uk turbo 2000 classic shape for 10 k or under even. saw one recently for less than that(think it was roundabout 8 grand) with roughly 20000miles on the clock...who knows u cld possible find one with less, it would just be a case of waiting a while for one to come up for sale.

It's purely the finance company that's limiting the insurance groups. I'm not bothered about insurance costs, i'm finally at an age where it's reasonably sensible.

I thought perhaps the uk models might be lower than the imports, but seems to be true that all sti models at least are IG 20.

Pretty gutting really as was all set up for my first scooby after years of wanting one.

yes all sti's are group 20, but uk turbo is 17. u could get a classic and get a new ecu and someone really good to map it and ud be just as quick as an sti.

I was told (quite possibly wrongly) that they'd reclassified the older uk2000 model to IG 20? Can anyone confirm that?

I'm sorry as i know this will have been covered a million times, but what is the power difference between the classic 2000 model and say the import sti?

I'm currently driving round in a Toyota MR2 Turbo with 300bhp, so would hate to get a scooby and be dissapointed with the performance.

hey mate how old are you and how many no claims have you got? how come the finance company won't let you have above a group 18, don't mean to be nosy

The finance company is just trying to limit its liability of me writing it off i'm guessing. I'm 25 with 4 years no claims and never had an accident, touch wood, but i'm self employed so don't have the best credit rating, otherwise i'd just get a personal loan and buy a mint older sti.

How about the UK RB5? According to this website - Insurance groups - Parker's

There's a few special editions that are IG 17. Can anyone tell me if these models stretch to 2000?

nope all classic uk turbo's are group 17. classic turbo is about 214bhp, sti's I think vary...earlier ones a think are 260 ish(maybe not), but pretty sure that newer classic sti's 98-2000 were 276bhp.

Anyway, u could easily get a totally mint uk turbo 2000 and get it mapped with new ecu, turbo etc(and it would be safe) to 300 ish BHP for under 10 grand. check out andy f.'s site for examples of this AndyForrestPerformance and look at the "99-00 uk/euro/wrx" down the left hand side.

and in answer to ur second comment, no problem. countless people have hepled me since I joined, I think this is a fantastic site so glad to help out when I can.

And if this - Subaru : UK TURBO 2000 275bhp FSH was in white with half the miles, i'd have just bought it!

the 99-00 models have better brakes, different front bumper...and a slightly altered engine from before that(meant to be more reliable).

looks like a tidy car, but I woult never buy from a garage...just my personal preference. go private and get an enthusiast owned mint one with less miles. Car in the advert seems like a decent price though. mine is a 98 turbo terzo ltd ed with 59000 on the clock and I paid a hell of a lot less than that...but mine was accident damaged. its your choice at the end of the day.

Have to get from a dealership due to the finance. But spent a long time in the industry myself, so should be able to find the right car, even though it will undoubtedly cost that bit more.

far too high mileage for the money! that one I saw a while ago on pistonheads was about that price with 20000 miles on clock. basically new, so u cld get it mapped to that power and u would know exactly how good a car it was and wouldnt need to worry about how its been treated for 80000 plus miles before u bought it.

hope this helps. And theres plenty of subs about in great condition so dont rush into buying anything.

Normally i wouldn't touch a car like this, but then it seems to be mostly cosmetic modifications?

hi fella. first of all, welcome to scoobynet.

il echo the above regards insurance groups. the uk turbo between my94-00 were all group 17. the sports varied from 13-14, and the special editions i think like rb5 terzo etc were maybe 18.

anywho, you should be able to get a decent my99-00 car with low mileage for anything between 5-7k. depending on mileage, mods, no. of owners etc.

with the change, the uk engines should take around 300-320bhp on standard internals. after that your looking at rebuilds for the engine, gearbox etc.

for the record, i got my my99 uk classic for £3900 in dec 06'. high mileage at 120k, but the engine had only 50k on it, so i budgeted for replacing wear/tear items.

original gearbox has just gone pop at 135k miles, so the cars, when treated and cared for properly and on time, are pretty reliable. the weak spots on my99 cars, however, are the m.a.f. sensors. do a little research on these.

oh and if you wanna get more power, upgrade your clutch/flywheel gearbox to handle the extra strain.

Lots of posts mentioning that you could modify the car, none (so far) mentioning that you must inform your insurance company (I'm not sure whether it affects the grouping). If you do plan to mod make sure that any policy you take out will allow modifications before you buy it and then be prepared to pay a little extra for every declared mod, some companies just charge a flat administration fee so it actually makes more sense to do a few at a time.

Yeah my insurance company knows the score with my cars! he he, they don't stay standard for long.

My current MR2 turbo is being rebuilt with a 2.2 stroker bloke, forged pistons, conrods etc. RPS max clutch, fidenza custom flywheel and TRD 1.5 way LSD. Once it's all finally sorted with a new garrett turbo on the way, we'll be looking at around 470bhp at the fly and should be doing 1/4 miles in the 12's.

I wish the RB5 was continued to 2000, but it looks like it stopped production in 1999. Pretty typical really!
