I've been offered a nice civic type r in PX against my impreza ( wouldn't be keeping it, its just a mint deal). So i thought I'd go on there forum for some advice. Only did 2 posts, then got properly slated. All i said is "i know the type r doesnt have the same sort of power as the scooby" Oh well obviously not all forums are as friendly as ours.

 

Like that on a lot of forums,always makes for funny reading tho!

They can be defensive on that forum but then you would be if its your pride & joy that you're defending! I go on both forums but prefer scoobynet of course, especially as I moved from a ctr to a scooby.

I reckon they may have took you the wrong way and thought you were starting a impreza vs ctr thread. Anyway you were only stating the obvious

 

They were ok with me when i swapped my CTR for my STi, although some of them did think it looked like a Chavs car

Coming from a CTR breadvan driver wearing his Burberry cap and driving with his chest 3cm from the steering wheel. (don't get me wrong, I'm a big Honda fan, but the CTR has got a bit of a rep for that eh.)

 

If i get a chance I'll post a link but there site is so slow it drives you mad waiting for the pages to load. Anyway one guy on there who i think must be slightly deranged says his "ctr is as quick if not quicker" than his mates sti type r that has been highly modified and remapped If people are going to bull you would think they would at least try make it sound believable.

the old civic type r or the new one? id say your cars proably worth more. if its the old one id go and check it all out mines have problems. I hear the old ones are loud inside. best have a test drive.

 

I used to own a CTR and have been a member on that forum for a long time, its a really good forum.

However, many are quick to slate new members and the CTR is defended to the hilt on there.

I had my CTR for 3 years from new and it was no where near as fast as my STi, any gear any speed it would of been blown away

 

I think the argument was with the WRX and its 0-100mph times with the CTR being a shade faster.

Its like comparing chalk and cheese with the CTR and an STi, there is no point.

Being an ex - CTR owner i am also a member of that forum. Used to be pretty good a couple of years back but its gone a bit downhill so i dont post to much on there now

 

It's all since the price of the old 02-03 plate CTRs fell into the area where the 19 year old ex Nova driving Chavs can afford them

 

Just be careful non of you come up against an SC'd CTR. That would be quicker than an STI.

So basically after it has traction and is in a straight line then yes it could be quicker than a standard STi.

Corrected for accuracy - remember the old CTRs weigh 1200kg. Still, I'd take a lardy STi any time !

 

All car forums are like the OP said - everyone thinks their main forum is friendly but all the forums I have been on can be disparaging about other marques - especially when you come from one to another car and they say you obviously have better taste now etc...

I have found a lot of forums for the more expensive/faster cars to be not so friendly - more ego and more attitude makes for not so friendly forums imho - and I WON'T tar everyone with the same brush as it's a strange forum that does not have it's fair share of know-alls, in-crowds, wind up merchants, nutters, cliques etc

There are plenty of vids on Youtube. I remember seeing in car footage from inside an STI going around Knockhill and there was an SC'd CTR on the track at the same time. It was blowing everything else into the weeds.

Having previously owned three CTR's myself I know what great fun they can be. Yes they have traction issues, but once fitted with a Quaife LSD they become much more manageable. I have been in an SC'd CTR and they are just mental. Massively quick. There are some out there fitted with turbo kits from CPL Racing, others are using the Rotrex SC kits from TTS that are also developing huge power levels. Most owners go for the Jackson Racing SC kits, along with a Hondata ECU, new manifold and exhaust they are easily good for approximately 300bhp, then you can go a step further with FI profiled cams etc for even more horses.

Many people are too quick to knock cars they no experience with or know little about.

Also having been out in Litcho's new JDM CTR (which is massively improved over the old CTR) I was astonished at how quickly that covered ground, and along the right road with right driver, would hussle an STI in my opinion.

STI's are quick but they NOT the quickest thing out there, not unless they are in the high 300bhp range.

Also, it could be argued that S'charged Civic owners need to be careful they don't come up against a tuned STi; many are around the 340 level! Scoobies are significantly more tunable at sensible money than type Rs!

A fair few grand depending on what route you take i.e. staying NA or going FI. Staying NA and going down the route of a Toda stroker kit is big money.

MrRA is correct in what he says as well as New Scooby 04.

You can put say £4k into a CTR for power mods alone and get 300bhp and this would in a straight line in gear beat a standard STi. However, throw in a bend or two and its knackered, the same applies from a standing start. You would need another £1-2K to really sort the handling out on a CTR for it to be a true monster killer. The cost above for power mods applies to the JRSC kit and a few bits and bobs, TDi North and CPL as mentioned are both excellent tuners! They have a CTR running 600bhp!!

Whereas as the handling on say a hawkeye STi is far from out of this world, it is pretty well sorted, so chuck £1k in for power mods are you are hitting around the 350bhp and 390lb/ft mark, this is enough to dispose of said JRSC'd CTRs, forgetting bhp figures the JRSC'd CTR will be no where near the torque figure that is produced by said tuned hawkeye STi.

End of the day having previously owner an 03 CTR and now on a MY07 STi I can say that both cars are superb IMO, both very different and in standard form leagues apart but they should be, CTR costing £17k when new, STi costing £27k when new.

Having come from a tuned CTR to the STI myself for the simple reason that to get STI performance and driveability from the CTR was way way beyond what I was willing to spend on it, £2500 to get to the 240 it ran was enough.

Many of my mates still drive CTR's in various states of tune with one running Supercharger and LSD and off the line its bloomin quick IF you know how to drive it.

Out the box the new shape (FN2) CTR just aint up to the mark IMHO of course.

me too i ran a toda , hondata, decat n/a ctr for 3 years and loved it -the touring style gear change is great

in the end it was costing a lot of ultimately dead money (its hard to sell a modded ctr) to get more power with the downside of handling being compromised

now i have a rb320 which is fast enough for me and corners as if on rails, in the ctr even clios were giving me hassle on the twisties

its hard work too with vtec style engines as the power is always up top

 

......looks like it has turned into an Impreza vs CTR thread on here after all.

My sister has got an 06 Final Edition EP3 Civic Type-R and its awesome, I drive a lightly tuned Hawkeye STi and I honestly think that its almost as fun around the bends as my Scoob. In a straight line, its not in the same league, but around the bends of a reasonably twisty road, IMO, they are very very closely matched. Obviously the tighter the twists or on a long open stretch, the massive torque difference would mean that the STi would pull away cleanly.
