Had mine done one month ago including cam belt £495 at subaru main dealer (mgk twickenham) 2003 sti ppp, i think £700 is a bit over the top.

yeah thats what i thought..... Ive used the garage for years and they only do performance cars and its just came up expensive as they normally do but i must be able to get it cheaper.

I was thinking trying mocom? they are close to me as im based in hertfordshire and distance is a factor too.

Where scoobybits based?

Even a main dealer would be cheaper than that.

Mocom seem cheap and come well recommmended, I'm planning to use them for my cambelt once the MOT is sorted. Whereabouts in Herts as I'm not far from Watford

near hertford myself john, i hoping a few people come on here saying mocom are good then ill try them out cause £700.00 is stead, they did say all tensioners might not need changing which could lower the price but that is worse case.

API are a stretch, but happy with the 90K they did on mine for £460 I think it was - £700 is extracting a lot of urine!

I've asked the question about the tensioners because the quote I got from my local garage was £375 + vat for the cambelt, tensioner and idlers

https://www.scoobynet.com/general-te...ml#post7599241

They seem to be quite robust and not always required

If you are supplying the oil I would want two major services for £700.
I think they have seen you coming and are having you over. If people are daft enough to pay these prices they have more money than sense.

You could come to Darlington from almost anywhere in the UK, stay in a hotel overnight, have your service done properly, pay for all your fuel and still have good change out of £700!!!

API did a major service incl cambelt for £400 a couple of years back, even with inflation and general cost rises they will still be nowhere near that price you had quoted.

Just edited to quantify what the major service entailed as this would obviously impact on costs charged compared to others-

new plugs, oil and filter changed, gearbox and rear diff oil changed, antifreeze changed, cam belt changed, fuel filter changed, full check over, brakes etc(no air filter as i had a recent new one fitted so no need to change it)

£700

I would get them to price match a main dealer, if you are happy with them - I bet they do!

I had an expensive cambelt service myself. Had a new tensioner fitted and one of the idler rollers changed to the wider type.
This is from RCM, £585. So if i had not changed the other idler, it would have been £500.
BUT i had no spark plugs changed nor anri-freeze changed that time.
Not that it would get near 700 quid like if i had done, LOL.

I always thought it was skimping not to renew tensioners?

Is it worth the risk only doing a part of the job and saving a 100 quid?

Tensioners are not replaced as a matter of course in my experience
( although not as a subaru mechanic but another major make of car) some kits come with the tensioner included so it would be sily not to fit it at the time of change, and its almost impossible to predict a bearing failiure, but as a precaution its probably worthwhile to do belt and tensioner at the same time if only for some peace of mind......

Didnt have mine done at belt change though.

Revolution do this for under £400 I believe.

£700, I would have assaulted the person who quoted me this figure!

Blimey. Had my 03 WRX done by Iain Grieve, Subaru dealer in Falkirk and it came to just over £300! Warned me it might want a tensioner but turned out it didn't.

Shop around chap!

Where else is local to me @ Hertfordshire, gunna give Mocom a call.

Zen? Where are they based
Revolution? Where are they based

Seriously £700 is 10% value of the car!!

Zen are in Wellingborough - not too far (Zen Performance - Performance upgrade solutions for Japanese cars )

Revolution are way oop north - Newcastle way iirc (Revolution)

You could also try Power Engineering - They're in Uxbridge (Power Engineering: Subaru Tuning for your Impreza, Turbo, WRX, STi, 22B or P1)

I cant believe people are payin between 4 and £600 for a service !! thats just stupid theres plenty of mechanics out there that could do it for half that !!! ,i think main dealers are a rip off and dont have the best mechanics anyway.

fair comment, but i would rather take it to a specialists or a reputable dealer and pay a little for security, than some back street spanner monkey "mate of a mate, of a cousins father in laws mate of a....." well you get the idea.

As simple as it gets, "you pays your money and you takes your choice!"
I have used Scoobyclinic, TSL, Tracktive, RCM, API and i like RCM. Being in Notts is a pain for some of the best folk are bloody miles away but its worth it i think to get what i consider to be the best quality of service from them.
Not everything has ever gone smooth with me either, with some of the above names giving me some pi$$ poor service in the past, but hey it happens.
Thats why i dont go back and i stick with RCM.
Its just another one for that fantastic phrase that is "opinions are like arseholes, everybodies got one!" LOL.
Take it where you feel comfortable.

The only reason I would pay someone to do my Cambelt and not do it myself is for the Insurance ....... if it goes bang they are liaible ... which rules out a mate of a mate of an ex Subaru Mechanic

Quick Reply: Majour service inc cambelt approx £700.00
