got pulled by the cops today, for window tints and front number plate.
they tested my tints with some sort of decive, that can tell how much light can go through the window.
it came back at 50% and they said it needed to be 75%
and one of my m8s thinks the number plate on jap imports can be smaller than the standard uk one?
is that true?

window tints are not part of the mot the police will tell you otherwise but they are not part of the inspection the numberplate at the moment has to be visable from a reasonable distance and secure but this is changing soon in line with the police standards at the moment we cant fail a car for small print/spacing of letters but as i say this will change very soon on the next computerised revision hope this helps

Imported non type-approved cars with an apeture too small to accomodate a std sized registration plate; may use motorcycle characters and spacing.

I had my plates changed to standard size ones, not worth the risk of being hassled by police regardless of how legal it is. I know window tints are frowned upon by the plod, I was questioned about the tinting on my windows until I explained it came from the factory like that i.e the tint is actually in the glass and not a stick on job.

Id suggest retaining the Japanese plate holder/surround on the rear and then fitting a motorcyle character plate legality. With this on the rear Id argue that it is quite legal to fit a similar part to the front.
