what would happen if you took a newage wrx with a standard td04 turbo and replaced it with a td05 16g turbo would anything bad happen to the car. or would it work away fine but just not to it's optimum level??

if its set for same boost will run lean and then melt your pistons,

Like to know how it will do that, mixture/AFR is set by adding fuel to the measured air flow - what a dumbass reply!

Basically you would gain two parts of nothing, the responce will be slower than it could be, the ignition retarded of where it could be, the boost would be the same, small increase in efficiency due to the larger turbo, it would be safe, but for the loss of responce and spool, why bother for about 10bhp which is all you will gain!

On the Forester forum a guy replaced his TF035 with the larger TD04, the pre remap dyno curve showed a gain of 9bhp as boost was the same - fueling and ignition unchanged, so no benefit going taken of the larger turbo (bit different after the remap though!)

It depends on the exhaust system you have on it and the wastegate setting. As there was never a front entry subaru TD05 produced I assume it has been tampered with ?

If the exhaust is very efficient then you may get either poor boost control with a surging level or possibly boost creep at higher rpm which, on the original 380cc injectors and std pump, could exceed their capacity and cause lean running.

Then again it might be fine ! Get someone to check it would be my advice.

What he says!^^^^

FYI when I swapped the TD04 on mine for a VF35, (with supporting mods) I went straight for a remap. There was no incresed knocklink activity on the way to Bob's, and IIRC when Bob interrogated the ECU he didn't see any evidence of fine learning etc.. but the car had just felt as flat as a pancake: no Ompf, whatsoever. Then it was mapped and

WOW!

I'd hold back on the turbo till you can get it mapped, at the very best, you won't get the best out of it till then!

Im getting way too excited about this rear heated screen boost thing, car pulling well up the revs. .... i could go on forever.

as long as the turbos are similar in size and airflow you should be fine. i changed my turbo for a much bigger unit, and before i could re-map the car i got tempted to push it a little bit... #3 bearing broke.
