Default CODE READER HELP FOR NEWBIE

Hello and thanks for letting me join your forum.

I have recently bought an Jap imported 1996 legacy GT (first subaru) really pleased but the check engine light came on the other day. Took it to my local garage and they said is is not 16 pin OBD compiant as it is a jap import.
What is used to check fault codes on imports? There are loads of imported Subarus so it must be quite common. Any help would be appreciated. The fault caaused the revs to drop right of but seems to be an intermittant fault so i am hoping it would be logged in the ECU.

On the classics you either need a 'select monitor' which most subaru garages will have or on imprezas check here Scoobypedia | Trusted knowledge for everything Subaru | Scoobypedia / Scoobypedia (under ECU) as they have green and black connectors to check and reset the ecu but i don't know on a Legacy.

(it's not OBD compliant as it's an early car not becasue it's an import iirc)
