Default Just bought my first Impreza

After 7 years of wanting one I have finally bought one It’s a WRX STi 04 in Black.

While I was doing the paperwork I was toying with the idea of the Prodirve backbox @ £300. The sales guy told me this was the same as the one on a WR1 and will give the same engine note.

After some research on the internet I found there are different types of backbox. The oval is the one I believe I’m buying, but there are details of a 3” round on (perhaps part of the PPP) . Can anyone clear this up as I cannot seem to find genuine subaru backbox's on the net.

I'm not after anything crazy, I just want to hear that flat-four a bit more as the standard backbox on the Sti seems a little quite.

Thanks.

It will be 2.5" bore and you can buy a nice backbox for a lot less than £300. You will increase the burble by the special dealer parts, but not as much as the 3rd party exhausts. Just depends on what you're after.

Try these: Subaru Impreza Exhaust decat downpipe, centre section, sports cat. :

Welcome to the subaru fold, from a fellow black STi owner.

You can rest knowing that your STi will be faster than blue/red/white. It's common knowledge the blacks are faster.

and thanks for the welcome.

I was keen to keep the car as close to standard as possible. I have tried listening to them on utube but need some decent speakers on the laptop! I think I need to get to a meet and have a listen to other peoples .

That's not a bad idea. The best way to know for sure.

Remember the more parts you place/cats removed, generally the louder it gets, until it's fully decatted.

The Ninja is a nice backbox. lOOks and sounds the part. No drone with just a backbox swap, certainly know you're driving a subaru.

This is true. I have a standard black WRX and I have yet to be overtaken by a non black STi

I did see a few on ebay, thats when I noticed that there are 2/3 different boxes, a prodrive oval, prodrive round & a WR sport oval. At that point I got a bit confused and decided to post the question!

The standard one is round I believe !!! same as normally included in the PPP. Also (sure I read this somewhere) that the WR1 and PPP have a sports CAT which I'm guessing will up the volume a bit. Quite a few people take theirs off and fit aftermarket ones if they want it to be a bit louder so as has already been said there;s always loads for sale !!!

Also I can say with no bias (**HONEST GUV** ) it will sound luverly with the prodrive box !!!

Welcome!

H&S original scooby design all the way if you want a nice burble, but not OTT. Looks discreet and std fit too!

Thanks,

Its the burble I'm after without going 'over the top'. The WR1 sounded lovely but I there is more to that system than just the backbox.

As said earlier, you could change the backbox to pretty much anything without it being too much. It's only when you replace the other parts that it makes a difference.

If you're gonna decat/mod the rest of the exhaust; i'd buy a milder backbox now, for when that day comes.

If not; i'd buy a louder backbox, because with just that changed it really doesn't make much more noise.

I went to the Ninja and i could hear the car. Then decatted the rest of the exhaust with afterburner and non resonated. Then the rest of Scotland could hear my car.

Then went to a 3" "quiet" exhaust. The car sounded crap. Felt less guilty for my wee one in the back, but ultimately fell out of love with the car.

Then i went mad and bought a custom 3" scaffold pole with a bean can for a silencer. What?! What did you say?!?

Aye, it's loud, but i've got a bung for family use. Best of both worlds!!

LMAO , I think I'll keep it standard for a few weeks and take a look at the oval prodrive to see if it looks right.

I may be tempted by a sports cat, I don't fancy a decat is case of emission problem at mot time.

Thanks for everyone;s help and hope to see some of you at a meet someday. (I'll be the one with my head next to your exhaust!)
