Consider looking for a 1.8, I had one for 8 great years, I think you may find the 1.6 a bit under powered.
Also make sure that you do get an AWD one, yes there was a front wheel drive version at that time. The AWD is reason for having an Impreza, without it there are many better options

difficult to say about cost except that book price for mine 4 years ago with 120k on the clock in very good condition and full dealer history was ~£1400. It also had rear spoiler, front grill and wheels from the '95 turbo which probably would not make much difference to price made it look a hell of a lot better than the base car.

1.6, I won't bother. They are FWD and have about 90bhp. Try and get a 2.0 Sport AWD, so much better. There is a member on here and ISN, that started with a 1.6 Impreza and how has a version II STi.

I had a 1.6 classic front wheel drive for about 5 years until I was old enough to insure my newage WRX. While the WRX is a different car altogether, don't be put off the 1.6 Whilst it was obviously slower, it was OK. Mine had a full body kit, much of it from a breakers yard, a Powerflow back box and a K&N cone filter. It looked and sounded excellent and was cheap to run and to the average man on the street it might as well have been an STI. It always amazed me that the body even had a transmission tunnel for rear wheel drive and so much was the same as its big brother. Remember without the 4 wheel drive it is much lighter than a Sport. When I came to sell it I had loads of interest as there were so few 1.6 saloons around. It's too easy to under-rate the 1.6 if its is looks and sound you are looking for.

for the record, when i was 21 and passed my driving test, i got insured on a 2.0 sport for £1500 via tesco.com insurance.
seriously, try them and really look around. a 2.0 sport is group 13, whereas the turbo's are 17-20. ask nathan (20w.a.s.), hes paying 3k on his wrx.
search round anyways, and good luck fella
