Question What is big end failure?

As on fifth gear last night, a common problem with Impreza's. Now has me paranoid as I do get occasional bangs when starting, sound like somthing hitting the bulk head but can't locate it, also at times when at low rev's. But not all the time?

The fifth gear thing was rubbish and misleading, from what I have read the knocking on startup is normally caused by piston slap which is less of a problem. Probably the worst scooby buying guide I have seen, didn't mention anything about fuel used or to look out for engine mods. I don't think I am alone in thinking that fifth gear is an awfull program.

Here here. Absolute tosh.
Piston slap when cold is quite common and not really an issue.
If a knocking is present when warm, its quite probably a spun bearing.
A big end is a bearing shell that goes inside the conrod and around the crank shaft. If these get starved of oil, they over heat and start to break up.
Only cure is a rebuild including a new crank.

Big end knocking is very loud so if its just a faint tapping that you can hear when warm, its probably tappet or injector noise.

Not surprised they got it wrong, 5th Gear is PANTS, especially that silly whinny bint. Someone needs to kick her in the baby-maker. She's

Although I'd still let her if she asked nicely.
