What mileage was on the car? If it was me I would be wondering why this problem has even arrisen on an 03 car?? and why they have sold you such a pile of Sh*te?
Not that i'm slagging off what is no doubt your pride and joy, i'm just trying to help you out by giving my opinion...
If possible I would want them to take the car back so you cant find one that has been looked after as well as possible in your price range. That make sense? Have you considered maybe buying one privately on pistonheads etc thats been owned by an enthusiast?

You need to find out what there gonna do mate. If there gonna do a full rebuild mite be worth keeping it which for 2.5k sounds like they are, if there just gonna bang a new crank in i'd walk away! As above tho full 12 month warranty on the work pls.

not knowing the standard of the garage's work, its hard to say.
basically you "should" have the choice.
what do they seem like down there?
experienced engineers or aggressive grease monkeys.
the latter "might" just do a quick fix.
the former "might" make a good job of it.
as someone else says, you would question this happening on an 03.
what other internal damage has been done, that doesn't show any signs let?
piston rings/ cams / oil pump?
personally i would try and get your dough back (its not like scoobies are hard to get hold of) also on somewhere like pistonheads, enthusiasts tend to look after their cars and all well known among the users!!
good luck

If it's a Subaru main dealer or well known garage with a reputation to protect then reject it under the terms of the sales of goods act. If it's some backstreet operation then mention to them you are considering exercising your right to reject the car- if they seem very aggressive about the idea chances are you won't see any money out of them and you'll be compelled to take the repair or take them to court.

If you let them repair the car and get a warranty make sure it covers labour costs and not just parts, if i were in your position i would want a new factory replacement engine or my money back in full.

If they repair your car right and are willing to warranty those repairs for 12 months, where's the problem.Even if you got your money back and purchased another impreza you would still only get at best 12 months warranty and if you bought privately you wouldn't get any cover at all.
Better the devil you know, I reckon.
