STi WRX info from down-under

Subject: [wrx] '01 cylinders strengthened
The Japanese are really something. With the '01 or Version 7 Impreza (oops,
just realised Subaru have stopped the Version numbering on the New Age
Impreza, it's now either an NB or STi), popular Japanese mag, HyperREV have
several issues covering the new cars from head to toe including a special
edition called New SUBARU IMPREZA STi Perfect Guide ... I have a copy and
it contains everything you want to know about the STi ... gear ratios,
engine block, pistons, cams etc .. has a schematic of the IHI turbo as well
.. (damn, i need to learn Japanese !!) .. mentions something about IHI RHF
5HB and RHF55 ??
There's also pic of a fully assembled gearbox (Model TY85 & TY75) and a
graph showing RPM vs Speed between the 6 speed STi and 5 speed NB.
Fancy Subaru went to the trouble of fitting a sensor to the FUEL DOOR. Any
idea why ? The dash has a display to show if the Fuel Door is "locked" or
not. I believe the small LCD screen under the fuel gauge is a
multi-purpose screen, the pic in the mag shows "Out. Temp"
There's also a drawing of the new Brembo disc rotors that looks like DBA's
new "diamond" design. (who copied who or is that now industry standard for
improved ventilation?)
Anyway back to my subject heading. The new block now incorporates
strengthened cylinder top.
Previous EJ20 engines if you look at the cylinders vertically, it's a
figure '8' with the top and bottom of the cyl. wall joined to the block
that runs the entire cylinder height.
On the new engine, Subaru have
"bridged" the sides of each cylinder to the block so now you see four
'struts'. I say bridge because they only serve to hold the cylinder top and
dont run the entire length.
Enough for now. Go get yourself a copy of this mag .. it's published by
Hyper REV and the latest editions are Volume 9. The "Perfect Guide" is a
special edition sold separately.
