The panel filter will allow for greater air flow into the engine, it won't do any harm in fitting one. They'll out last any OEM paper one!

The car has already got a panel filter, a paper one which in tests by Prodrive, Scoobymag and Harvey Smith (a respected regular on here) was proven to have just as good filtration and often greater flow than many expensive after-market panels from the likes of Green, K&N, STi and TSL. The intake on a Scoob is very well designed and thus there are very few improvements available and little extra performance. The only real justification for one is that the OE paper item is a serviceable part and thus needs replacing at every service. Most after-market panels (excluding STi) are lifetime items, simply requiring periodic cleaning but not replacement. There's not much reason not to have one either as they can do little damage, apart from rumors of ITG filters which were damaging MAF sensor through oil contamination.

So, if you accept there's little/no performance increase but want to save a few pennies at each service, go ahead.
