My [dreadful looking] WRX sticker on the boot had laquer sprayed over it, so although I managed to get it off with a heat gun and a stanley knife, there is still a visible laquer line where it used to be - so unfortunatly I need to get the entire boot re-sprayed..

You can remove the paint with the decals, but this is more usual if the car was resprayed shortly before the decals were applied. On an original paint job this shouldnt happen unless you are very cack handed.
I wouldnt use a heat gun as they can be too hot. Hairdryer is fine, just work a small area from the edge at a time, peel up slowly and move onto the next part. All you are doing is softening the adhesive on the back of the decal to make it easier to remove.
Any old residue can be removed with white spirit.

Does the same method apply to windscreen decals too? I`m thinking of taking mine off. Maybe put something else there, don`t know yet.

As mentioned above, hairdryer or heat gun, elbow grease and sore fingers
. I found dental floss (between the car and the badge) very helpful when removing the badges.
Removing decals from the windscreen is easier buy running the car with the blowers on full and full temp so the inside of the window was warm. Leave a hot sponge over the decals for a while, then peel off. A hairdrier on warm also helped
.

Many thanks for the response Wolfie, appreciated. I`ll take it off & see whether I like the cleaner look. If not I`ll be having sommat else.

i had major trouble when removing the subaru swoosh from my passenger door. I was really careful using hairdryer and stuff, but still managed to completely remove the paint from the door. One respray and £300 later and all was solved.
