All dealers are adamant about 400hp upgrade for the new STi, none of us on here believe it, however there is no smoke without fire.

It's serious as people could be miss sold these cars if it's a lie. If Subaru can prove the 400hp upgrade is real it changes my perception of the new car completely.

Prodrive / Mike - please tell us what's going on....

Chinese whispers. I am very doubtful Suabru will offer a warranted 400bhp upgrade. It's almost as laughable as BMW claiming the latest M5 will do in excess of 200mph!

No chance of 400bhp in my opinion. Too risky from a warranty point of view on the current 2.5 engine.

Everytime someone has spoken to someone from Prodrive, the 400bhp claims have been DENIED! Just more like a 340bhp package. But if they do the 400bhp pack, the general view is that it will need a bigger turbo, uprated internals etc as the pistons are cast and not forged unlike the 2.0JDM STi's..

Was told a 400ps kit was in developement by my local MD on Sunday.I argued the toss that it was just an unfounded rumour, but apparently thats what International Motors are telling them all.

edit..he did mention that it*would*be expensive tho

My local dealer told me 6k which would be something of a bargain as it would have to include 18's.

I reminded him that the Evo FQ400 was a 47k car, he had no response to that.

My dealer suggested a £40k Prodrive version with 400bhp.

Sounds more realistic than a ppp for the MY08 giving 400bhp.

But again, you could get to that figure for much cheaper done independently, so hardly seems worth it.

Will be fine as long as they put every car on a rolling road to verify the figure, otherwise it will be like the PPP before where it was claimed to be 300bhp, but was more like 270bhp in a lot of cases when the cars were actually tested.

I've got it. The new boxer diesel (I know you love em) can be easily expanded to 6 cylinders. The 400 figure is actually 400 ft/lbs of torque and not the bhp from the gas-guzzling petrol. Don't laugh - I'd buy one.....but then you probably knew that already .

I doubt it. Not aerodynamic enough, not light enough, not powerful enough. Some time ago a magazine did a feature on two companies trying to break the 200mph barrier with a Sapphire Cosworth. With nigh 600bhp apiece it wasn't done. 180 mph was reached quickly but 200mph forget it.

That sounds plausible, especially when you remember that Prodrive have that clever traction control system that had Clarkson puking on TG. Was the test car called a P2? I can't believe that Prodrive have developed all that technology just to show what they could do if they wanted.

And then there was an interesting denial on here from Mike Wood when that system was being discussed: No, such a system would not be released on a MY08 STi. Which to my eyes left future MYs open as possibilities.

All a bit speculative, but... Look what Litchfield's done with specials.

I have been told the PPP for the MY08 STi will be 340 BHP as IM and Subaru UK will not give a warranty guarantee on anything higher than that. And thats from a dealer principal who is one of Prodrives best customers. They may produce a MY08 STi Type R or Prodrive edition or whatever later on that will have 400BHP and cost a lot more but that is only rumour at the moment.

Would nayone pay £40k for a Subaru?

I for one would not.

£40k - 400BHP.

Second hand RS4, M3, AMG everything. All will hold there value better. All are better built. Just don't see Subaru selling many at £40k.

New £40k. 1 year on £24,995 trade-in

It's funny everyone mentions prodrive, when I asked my local dealer I was told that the specs for a 400 bhp version were sent to Tokio, that the car will be in Black only and will likely be named a Colin Mcrae edition. All of that is decided and the Tokio engineers are working on it, but whether the car will be released or not is still a question even to FHI.

If they make a black 400, labelled as a McRae special edition, they wont be able to make enough of them.

All depends on the cost though.

£40k+ to buy
£400 road tax (almost certain to go up every year too)
15mpg = less than 200 miles per fill-up
