Default How to get a fast scoob ?

Before I joined SN ,I always thought my scoob was top notch compared to those in my area.Since being here I have realised mine is pretty much a run of the mill one.I've always thought that I'm on a pretty good wage(according to the recent BBC program im in the top 10%) and yet I still can't afford half the mods that some of you guys have.My question is "How do you do it?" .Without comitting serious crime i.e robbing a bank or turning the Mrs to prostitution how the f**k do you afford/can you afford to tune your scoobs to the specs that they are ?
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated as I want more horses under my bonnet

I blagged everything A mate was selling on and I got his AST's for £100. Another mate needed a WRX bootlid for a carbon spoiler, so I got his STi one, complete with wing. I bought 3 sets of STi alloys, complete with RE070 tyres for £400 a set and sold 2 of them on here for £550, making mine £100. Prodrive flaps came from an ex-owner who'd moved up to Porsche, FREE ! Everything else was secondhand or blagged

The easiest way to get a fast Scoob, or any car, is to be a very good, fast driver. Michael Schumacher would walk all over most on here in a Nissan Micra. I can't say I'm anywhere near his league, but a combination of professional tuition and applied practice can make a huge difference. Plus, when you sell the car you take the performance with you

I have always wondered the same.

I think most people are just upto their eyeballs in debt if they are honest.

There was a recent survey on here about your job and a lot of scooby owners were contractors, IT, Oil, etc and so were in the higher income bracket. I have my own IT consultancy and my wife has here ow cake business so we do ok but most of my things are brought second hand off here, ebay or where ever. I rarely buy anything new.

E.g.

1) AP front barke setup (second hand)
2) Tein Flex and EDFC (second hand)
3) The car itself wasn't new
4) Turbo, etc, etc you see the pattern

I then get the basics fitted either myself if I can (which is not most), none subaru specialist if they can and then last via a specialist.

Ive spent maybe £6k over the last 3 years which is c£2k a year which I can manage without any finance.

I would say if you brought your car brand new and then did all your mods with brand new parts all the time and did every mod at a specialist then I think that would be very expensive.

I had no credit card debt before getting a scoob.
A few years ago I actually thought my wife may not notice a turbo back exhaust system on a previously standard car. I got away with it for a whole day til I had to give her a lift somewhere.

Get a job in IT and buy used - I did both. Just bought some rebuilt Leda coilovers off ebay for 150 quid!!

I fit all my own parts/mods so that helps to keep the cost down.

I think a lot of people on here spend every last penny on their car, that's all

Realistically, I spend about 350-400 a month on the car (inc services etc), but some on here must spend thousands a month.

You can go on trying to keep up with the guy next door ad-infintum. It's not about having the fastest car per se, it's about achieving the best gains your means.

It doesn't matter how much you spend; there is always someone who's going to be quicker. Whatever you do to the car, concentrate on enjoying it yourself and not trying to get the esteem of others.

There is more to life than a car!.......apparently!

£350-£400 A MONTH !!!!
This is what I mean, its a lot of money. How can you justify/afford that sort of expenditure I'd love to spend that sort of money but just couldn't justify it.I may spend a few hundred every couple of months but definatley not every month.I bet your right though, there's got to be people who spend alot more....but I also bet they have fantastic scoobs

im on 16k before tax a year, and i drive a good powered classic, most of my mods have been brought second hand and fitted by my self.

shop around, get as much info on what you want to buy, and be patient

modding can be done on the cheap with good parts, it just takes longer

You mean running the car or on mods? Mine costs me around £500 a month on the loan, tax, insurance and petrol. This month has been a bad un so far, approx £900 I justify it (to myself) by not blowing £100 a week on the lash anymore. Shhh, dont tell the missus

just cut back on everything.
Ive seriously cut back on drinking, used to spend at least £100 a week drinking and going out.
Now I spend it on the car instead. My liver is probably better off as well

Yeah thats it. Just plan to save and stick to it. I saved for feckin ages to buy myself the best example I could get for my money, and bought it straight out with cash...also paid the insurance in a lump some so I dont have any monthly outgoings/direct debits. So many people get tempted into just buying the first thing that comes along, and take out loans etc because they want things right away, which usually ends up with a lot of debt and a car that's not in great condition that costs alot more to maintain(taking money from your modification fund before you've even started!). Also I rarely drink, dont smoke...and still live with the parents!(20) Only interests are motorsports and birds...think thats the only way it should be atm!

Tbh if you have a wife your probably F*cked!

Alan

I support my wife, my child, have over 400hp under the bonnet, have a garage the size of most peoples local garage, a bungalow in the middle of the country up north set in an acre of land and I dont owe a penny apart from my morgage which has less than 15yrs to run.

Life is reasonably good

I dont even have any complaints.

The wife does all that for me too

Debt only means the car will be sold in the near future so why even bother

No offence like but IMO it all depends what you want from life. An expensive social life with lots of memories (or not as the case maybe) or things to show for why you get up every morning and work your **** off all day?

If you dont work your **** off all day then I think that could be an answer in its self

I've nothing against either life style, only when people complain as to why they dont have both, but if you do have both, well done

I like a bit of both to be honest,I like to get up,not always in the morn, and see what I've gained through hard work.I also like to have memories of all the money that I have "wasted" on a good social life .As I've said before I think Im on a pretty good wage and I'm lucky to get alot of time off work(I'm a shift worker) but I still cant see how some of the guys on here can afford the motors they have.I'm quite jealous really .I spose I've got to re-priorotise where I spend my spondoolies so I can get a few more goodies for my baby
