Unhappy Strange hollow humming sound

Hello All

I noticed today that when ever I am coasting (slowing down, odnt stop, get in to first gear and then slowly drive off) a hollow humming sound seems to come from behind the car.

I'm really worried. I just bought the car. Anyone know what this is or could be?

I can replicate this by following the above pattern. However If i stop completely and then drive off slowly the noise does not occur.

Thank you all for any help.

Could be the rear wheel bearing(s) they seem to fail quite a lot on scoobs.
They give a humming sound which increases with speed, It's actually more of a 'wah-wah' sound to be accurate. A good way to test it is to get your car to a garage, get it on the lift and spin each wheel to find out which wheel it is. It cost me £180 to replace mine, but I also needed a brake cylinder doing too, maybe because I'd put off getting it fixed for so long.

I had this on my MY98 classic. Turned out to be the dump valve spring on its way out. If i booted the car it didn't happen but if i coasted away the partially open dump valve vibrated. I thought it was the diff and took it to the garage, booted it all over the place to replicate the sound and looked a fool when it didn't happen, I coasted home and the noise came back . Anyway i put a VTA DV on after reading something in Gen Tech and the noise went away.

Hope this is helpful. BTW I think i have 2 DV's off my old car knocking about if you are stuck (haven't looked on View my scooby so don't know what you are driving)

Andy.

thanks. i have a MY04 WRX. Noise only occurs on coasting and when going into first gear. Once in second and the car is up on speed the noise goes away. bought my car from a dealer and so hopefully if it is a problem they will be able to fix it. If I stop and then drive the car in first the noise does not occur.

It only occur when the car is moving really slowly and you put it into first

thanks

i believe it goes away. It sounds as if it coming from the rear of the car under the bonnet.

Mine does that, put it down to the RA not having any sound proofing and the sound from my tyres (I did the usual check on each wheel and didn't find any play in bearings).
