258lbft @ 1800rpm - doesn't sound quite like the revving its nuts off to make it move story that our buddy is claiming it to be.
He just doesn't like it because its a diesel.

Could be laggy, like the early Ford 2.0 twin cam diesels before it was fitted with the variable geometry turbo (gosh mouthful of technobabel there
![EEK!](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/eek.gif)
Loads of low torque, but if the turbo isn't spinning its like a dead duck on dry land.
Or.
It could be very stall-prone below 1500rpm. Like the first common-rail Ford 1.8 Endurar-D (lynx) engines. Horrible horrible engine. Catch it in the wrong gear and its like someone turned off the ignition switch...just at the moment when you want to pull away quickly.

He seems to be on his own with this review though, I think every other review I'd read of the Subaru boxer diesel has heaped praise on it. Maybe just a case of wanting to stand out and be different? Plus he's not driven my 2.5SE Outback petrol, yes you can wind it up to make it shift but it's very little low end torque or high end torque for that matter and I get 30mpg on average. Pitch mine against the diesel and I see no reason why the diesel wouldn't win every time. Now, comparing to the 3.0 6 pot might be different but then the pricing is also different.

TG Mag gave the Leggy 16/20. WHAT CAR? also gave 4 stars. Let's not forget he bought a Ford Gt "cause it's the dogs" and then gave it back! He complains about the Info Screen being to bright.................turn it down then you crucsty old bugger! He hated the new STi but his colleague Bill Thomas loved it. 50p or half a quid?
Opinionated, boorish but a top bloke all the same. He is a God but like all god's he is flawed. He say's the pistons punch each other like a boxers...........no they punch out away from each other, not inwards Jezza!
I have had a go in the new diesel Outback and it's very good, quite and well specced. At tick over it is very quiet and not rattley like most diesels, manly because it does not need balancer shafts. The MPG gauge was reading 47 mpg and the dealer had been giving it some all day.
Many of the gadgets are on my 3 year old JDM Leggy but that's not a problem. Fit and finish are better than the Impreza. As WHAT CAR? said "its quieter at 70mph than a Rolls Royce Phantom (not the jet)"
