i've heard somewhere that japenese (as in JDM cars) cars are written off when they get to a certain age? is this true? if so how old does a car have to be for it to get written off?

Once they reach a certain age they have to go through a very extensive and expensive test (can't remember what its called) kinda like our MOT except a lot stricter. So its easier to get rid of the car and get a new one. Thats why cars are treated like white goods ie washing machines/fridges and are changed very couple of years in Japan. So they are not in essence written of, simply sold on. Hence the large number of JDM's available.

I think they have to have that test every few years full stop (sure it is called something silly like a sha'ken test) and it comes in at a lot of money. on a new car it is worth it but on a ten year old car it just isn't worth the money so they can be snapped up for a few notes and then shipped here. there used to be big profits/mark ups available on imports because they do little mileage and as japan doesn't salt the roads, have little to no rust.

A new car comes with a three year shakken, which has to be renewed every further two years. As James stated first, cars are not written-off due to age'. It is true though, that many cars are sold to dealers and then through auction, which have or are just about to run out of shakken.

There certainly did used to be strong profits available on good cars, but those days have long sinced passed.
