Cool

Back off hols I drove around a few dealers last week. Sat in an Oldham Volvo dealership was a 1995 T5R Estate in Creme Yellow, one of only 200 made ( the other 400 estates were either black or olive green ) anyway on close inspection the car has only done 39k and was previously owned by an enthusiast ( I've spoken to him )the car is in auto form and fully loaded inc; TRACS ( a traction control thingy ) and has previously undergone some engine mods via TWR, and was Tom Walkinshaws own car ! It is supposed to kick out 320bhp ( theyr'e 250bhp std ) and has printouts, bills/receipts etc....
In closing I've been out today and shocked loads of unknowledgeable people including a couple of lads in an M3 who wishes they hadn't tried losing me.........you see......when in the scoob, everyone knows how great they are and how fast etc.......but this.....ha..it's fun with a capital F......I s'pose all I need know is my pipe and flat cap eh ! ( thought I'd get that one in before you lot did ). I'd love to bring it on track.......just out of interest mind.

Yeah, the wolf in sheep clothes and all that

But I was wondering: I own a humble 1996 T5 estate, and TRACS or not (only works up to 40 km/h btw), the thing keeps spinning its wheels like crazy when you try to get away from the line. And my T5 (2.0, only available in Italy & Belgium) only has 210 bhp, so that must be a hoot with the 320 ... Also the torque steer is not exactly funny.

T5R was indeed a limited series, but I never heard of olive green ones ? Just the yellow & black.

Ah, cultural differences. In Belgium, still nobody seems to know the Impreza, so I have that same 'benefit' of having a few amazed stares from time to time.

Shame about it being the estate though, otherwise the grey hat on the back shelf would complete the picture

I LOVE that car, I think also that the estate looks better than the saloon.
Bring it to donno, I would love to see it.

Indeed the T5 is a great motor, having 320bhp is O.K. but on F.W.D there are the obvious limitations, TRACS only works on take off and cancels itself out above 25mph as you say.....I too thought only black or yellow estates were available ( I've seen a couple of saloon olive green T5R's ) maybe I need to do a bit more research into this, either way I'm thoroughly enjoying this well made car !....

Would it be rude to ask how much you paid?

Question

Dear Mellow Yellow! Glad to hear that you've got a T5R as your new toy. I have a 850R in Olive Green and of a Saloon variant. I was told it's quicker than T5's and T5R's. Do you know the differences? I reckon mine's pushing out about 280 ish and would like a wee bit more. Do you know what's been done to your motor to give it a few extra horses?

Mellow

Nice car!! Mate at work has an 850R and that is fairly rapid car - so a T5 with 320 BHP has got to be a lot of fun. You've got to bring that to Donington.

I can vouch for there being a T5R Estate in olive green as I drive my fathers all the time.

The T5R is quicker than the newer 850R.
I think the wheels look great. We looked in to upgrading it but as it's Auto then was advised not to by a specialist as it won't last very long compared to the manual > perhaps you should be aware of this Mellow?

It is quick in a straight line and really does tank. Certainly not as quick as the Impreza but still a good drive. It doesn't corner that well even though the supsension is quite harsh, and the brakes as standard are crap. Try turning TRACS off for fun and definitely put it in sport!

Best one I've seen was in Yellow with BI6 T5R as the plate

Ah, T5's, yummy! was looking at getting one instead of the Wagon, but decided with heart to go for the Wagon.

SuzyQ needs a new car and we *might* go for a T5R, but think we'll probably go for some 4x4 thing.

Oh, and just to put my oar in.

isn't a T5R the same as an 850R? Just that the model badging is R rather then T5R?

Would love to have the new V70R with AWD, with a little lite modification it'd be really fun!

MY,
Get the same sort of fun in my '97 Saab 9000 Aero, which replaced a WRX. I have to say I really love this car, it does so much so well. Who cares about a bit of torque steer? Half the fun is trying to get as much of the 260-odd lbs of torque on the road without spinning as possible (and I don't have traction control - was problematic on early Aeros, so Saab pulled it). Remember, this car was introduced as "faster than a Ferrari from 50-70" or something like that, and it bloody flies above 50 (feels as quick/quicker than the WRX, and weighs about half as much again).

plus, hate to say it, but lovely buffalo leather, 'leccy seats and everything else, Harmon-Kardon hi-fi, massive boot, blah, blah, blah.

Long live pointless front drive, huge Swedish luxury turbo-nutter cars.

I'm off to get a Abbot Racing ECU upgrade...

John,
I mailed you in November to meet up......if you remember the F40 was in Stratstones having some cosmetics done......a guy enquired about the car and I was made a sensible offer and subsequently parted with it........amazingly only 3 months prior in the middle of summer I had advertised it in TopMarques, Autotrader and Concours de Ferrari and got little interest in it!
I lost £10k in the 6 years of owning it.......the market is still f****d !

No the 850R is not the same as the T5R. The T5R was a limited run, had special 17" graphite coloured wheels and doesn't have a rear spolier on the roof.

I think there were more like around 2,000 yellow made, and then they released other colours in small quantities when there was a demand for more...therefore the yellow is the most common. They then released green, black, and white. White is the most scarce and I have never seen one.

T5R was the 1st Racing model, with 240?bhp
850R was the 2nd Racing model with 250?bhp

I'm sure the T5R has a higher top speed due to a German law which came in to play restricting the later models. There is nothing between the 0-60's but the later models are a shade slower...

There is the latest one which is an AWD model, it's AWD'R ? with 270bhp or there abouts...and a 2.5l engine compared to the 2.3l ones. Still, not as quick though...and not as special as the original T5R

I have a V70 AWD (not the R unfortunately) only 193bhp 2.5l with light pressure turbo it was a tossup between getting a scoob or modifying the Volvo. The main things that put me off were not many companies supplying tuning bits and the I couldn't find any decent sites or BBS's that were interested in performance.
The V70R is available with AWD which is awesome (especially with 320bhp on tap)

T5R.....spoke with Mr Tom Walkinshaw today.......definately only 200 yellow ones made, not 2000, T5R has the rear spoiler, it's standard power output is 250bhp and yes....with all the add ons and thingymabits it's a fun cheap car to drive/play with......oh and practical.
Martin.......dont be a pratt.... girly, unlike you when I say I'm gonna have or do something I do.....unlike Mr Dreamer Stirling...total messer and to$£er.....oh...the new scoob is due 01-04-01 !

Maybe those numbers are on a "per country" basis ?

Also, about the BHP: I thought that the bhp depended on auto (Aisin Warner ?) versus manual gearbox (240/250).

Anyway: it was an article on the yellow T5R that made me think about buying (and consequently buying) a Volvo.

Hmmm, interesting. I read up on it after posting and found a website. The T5R does not come with a rear spoiler as standard- but does have the roof rails...
It did said that there were 2500 made worldwide and having read my post it appears I was talking bollocks about the yellow numbers. It's just funny that I have seen loads of yellow ones but hardly any of the other colours...

There is an owners club list as well - do a search on altavista for it.
