sounds like a air block.

these things are bitches.

i just run the car with the res cap off and gently pump the lower pipe by hand.
its on the right hand side, looking in the engine and top up as it drops.

(****watch you hands and clothing on moving bits!!!)

bit fiddley, but works for me.

make sure the whole rad gets warm and the fan kicks in, once done.

Did my cars Radiator 2 Months ago, this is what I did.
Waited for the car to cool right down, took the hose off at the top (engine side) and poured coolant down hose until full. Refitted to engine and squeezed the bottom hose carefully , the header emptied. Keep topping up header tank and also the plastic filler next to battery. Refit pressure cap to header tank and run up to temp. Allow to cool off again and recheck header tank and plastic filler next to battery. Top up as required, remember to check hoses for leaks (I had to replace the small ones as the would not reseat and leaked under pressure).Allow to cool and repeat as required until water stops emptying for header tank. Keep an eye on the levels for a week or so and top up as required. Squeezing the bottom hose expelled LOADS, and I mean LOADS of air from the system, it takes time but be patent and methodical and you will be ok.PS:- I did the squeezing with the Engine OFF and system COLD,take care if you attempt this with a running and hot car!!!.......... Good luck! Ps PS:_ Place the Heater control in the HOT position or you may have air trapped in the heater matrix.... !

The cooling system will only take a finite amount of coolant, when it is full (all the air is expelled) it will not take any more, so the header tank and fill tube next to the battery will stop going down......well known issue with Impreza, troubles refilling the system. Total Impreza did an artical on it in one of there issues, I followed their instructions and all ok.Try a seach on this site and I am sure you will find a few links about cooling system problems!
