Just had my MY06 STi in for its 20k service but its only covered 17.5k and been informed that all 4 shocks need replacing, cant believe it but not too bothered as its under warranty but surely they should last longer that 17k or two years.anyone else had this?

Just got mine serviced and was told that one of my rears was knocking which is only noticable over speed bumps and very bumpy roads. Luckily getting replaced under warranty. I would rather have had both done but they would only pay for the one though!

If they go that often then next time I may swap to coilovers if its out of warranty! It may well be cheaper in the long run I was going to lower it on springs but does this just compound the problem?

Oh yeh I've just done 15K

someone has mentioned that inside the steering wheel shroud(plastic parts behind steering wheel)there is an airbag plate of some sort, which moves with the turn of the wheel, when on turn the plate rattles against the plastic shroud but i have been told by IM that the 05sti on car has a faster/shorter steering rack with the rubber sleeve removed, thus causing the rack joint to rattle against the bulkhead

im no expert on these matter's,but i have just got rid of every rattle on the scoob except this one,and its annoying the hell outta me man

93k on my classic, and as far as I know they are the originals.

Are the new models really that bad?

I think it must depend on where you drive.I work in central London and commute daily .I think speed bumps and crap roads are reponsible ,as my rears are clonking little mad .They're the original set,but the previous owner lived in the country .Mind you it passed it's MOTthis month so I guess there's no saftey issues ,or are there ?

i think the obvious MOT fail would be evidence of leakage but the usually bounce test would be vertually impossible due to the stiffness of the suspension hence most shockers will slip through and will only be a driver noticeble(knocks etc)

They went on my 03 STI at around 30k miles. My current (05) STI has only done 13k miles and is still on the original ones, with no problems thus far (touch wood). I too thought this wasn't as much of a problem on the 05+ cars?!

I had clonking at the back - took it to the dealer and it wasn't the shocks but the rear strut that had broken. Replaced under warranty.....even though it was a Euro.

Marcus mine has the exact steering column rattle as yours, the worst is when going round a bumpy roundabout it sounds awful. It sounds and feels like it is knocking against something, and judders through the steering wheel.

I was going to try and cure it myself but didn't know where to start, and as for the other rattles I've just given up

a few of the common rattles on the newage are

glovebox-easily sorted by wrapping some electrical tape around the metal latch that holds the glovebox closed

clock pod-again another easy fix, just wrap white plastic clips on the underside with some electrical tape, thus holding the clips in there moun ting holes tighter

driver's side door rattle-i removed it and refited with a few blobs of silicone here and there on the pop plugs, now rattle free!

the steering rattle-?????????????????????????

rear window rattle-remove the little white locating plugs at either end of the top edge of said rear window, this "should" solve that rattle
