i have bought a 1997 classic sti which is on the boat from japan but how much is it going to cost me to tax it? according to posts on here any car registered prior to 2001 will still pay the old tax amount but as my car is not yet registered in the uk will it be classed as a new car even though it is 11 years old
? cheers

Your car will be registered as the year it was made , so i would say you will
get away with it.
Its very confusing what the Uk tax man will try and get away with, and you and me the basic public get shafted.
Wish i had your insurance companies over here.

cannot personally confirm until my renewal comes through but i believe imported cars that are over 10 years old when registered in the UK will not pay the higher tax rate, if its under 10 years old and requires an SVA test then this will be higher tax.
I have a 97 sti imported a few months ago.
My V5 document says PLG for taxation class which iv been told means its the cheaper tax.
Dont quote me until i get my renewal in a few months time tho.

unless it was registered in the UK before 2001 then it wont matter and you pay the lower tax

There's been a few posts about this recently.
As far as i'm aware all imports will now have CO2 info on the V5 and will fall into the new tax banding.
Some people on here were trying to say that all previously imported classics were going to be hit with the higher tax but that's not true

yea it will be because it was under 10 years old when imported. I think the SVA test must pick up the CO2 emissions where as cars over 10 years dont need an SVA test.
Hope thats making sense

I wouldnt worry too much anyway cos today I heard on the radio that ALL cars over 7 years old will be taxed differently as and from April next year anyway. So come April next year anyone with a classic is going to end up paying loads more. Cant see how they are going to make it fair though. But hey these new tax rules are a load of boll*x anyway. Enviroment my ar*e.

Agree with this. I have a 1993 classic coming over at the moment. I am told by the importer (who obviously registers a lot of imports) that becuase my car is over 10 years old it will not need a ESVA and therefore there will be no C02 info for the car, hence it will be taxed under the old rules (PLG). I have also rang the dvla and they have confirmed that they will tax it under the old rules due to its age.

Have a look at this Road tax rules explained
It's the part at the bottom you need to read.

IMO eventually ALL cars will be taxed on C02 emmisions no matter how old.

You have misunderstood what I have said. On the radio today I heard that the goverment are introducing ANOTHER new system for cars over 7 years old (i.e the ones not covered by the new system just has just been introduced). IMO eventually ALL cars will be taxed on C02 emmisions no matter how old.

Ok I heard it wrong. The story was covering the fact that cars upto 7 years will fall into the new 13 band system. (most people already knew this anyway so i dont know why its made news again today as a "suprise") ITN - Anger at surprise road tax hike.
Edit: Heres the headline I heard, 4th from the bottom - Virgin got it wrong - Title says over 7 years, story says under 7 years.

There was a big article in a recent copy of EVO Magazine (maybe this months?) about road tax, a mate at work scanned it in and emailed it around.
Here's what they say as part of their top 5 ways round the new taxes-
HTH!

That opens the doors to all kinds of Japanese fare, such as grey-import Skyline, or various Mitsubishi Evos and Subaru STIs. Or maybe a non-UK-spec Nissan 350Z, given that the "official" version now finds itself in the ultra-expensive top tax band thanks to its 280g/km CO2 output. These cars will still need a single-vehicle type approval (SVA) but this doesn't, yet, include an EU-style CO2 test.

I don't think that statement can be correct as I know someone with a 2006 spec C and he is paying £400 this year then will be at the highest band next year. Although I have seen some 03 plate sti imports that had not been taxed on emmissions. But I suspect any new ones bought in the last couple of years have been stung, I for one will be sticking with my 03WRX for a while as it just scrapes below the 225g/km band so will be £300 next year and £310 the year after.
