Can someone confirm that Sti V3 is stronger than V4-5-6

I am right in thinking that as abroad generalisation the Sti V3 tends to have a stronger lump than the V4 onwards.
As we all know that the V4-5-6 P1 can have a habit of needing a rebuild at somepoint in their lives.
Can someone confirm that my thoughts on this are correct

Their not physically stronger, although they do have more interesting cam profiles, so can have stronger performance
The rods are the same on all of them, the blocks and crank are similar (the main thrust bearing moved from the middle to the end on the phase 2 - V5/6 cars). The pistons are all forged but have different crown designs on the later V5/6 cars for a different compression ratio
They're all as fragile as each other if not respected
Phase 2 engined cars are more sensitive to fuelling problems, and they have more intolerant MAF sensors which seem to like failing and if unchecked trashing engines.
So the short answer is; no they are not stronger.

Thanks for that detailed reply.
So the V3 lump is not stronger per say
I worded it badly I think. Reliable might be a better word to have used.
Of course it is down to how any of these cars are looked after.
However the V3 is less likely to have reliabilty issues due to other factors such as not having the weak later MAF and fueling.

When I was looking for a STI I was told that in Japan the 99-102 ron fuel wasn't readily available until after the V3's where built so originally mapped to run on 98 ron fuel. So the V3 has a better standard map to cope with UK fuel where the newer cars are mapped to run on higher octane so more likely to knock if UK fuel is used without a remap.
I run mine on supermarket 98 super, the previous owner used Vpower and I have had no problems so far and as far as I know it’s never had an engine rebuild.![Thumb](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/thumb.gif)
My V3 has ABS

If I had my time over again I'd be looking out for a V5/6 Sti RA Limited (the best Classic Impreza next to the 22b), ditch the stock ECU for a Simtech, and then starts fettling

My V3 let go about three weeks ago.... heads now attached to 2.5 short motor
After going to a track day at Castle Combe today - in the wet - I can confirm that the V3 is very exciting to drive with no driver aids and R888 tyres

(FWIW), My MY99 (V4) ate a couple of MAFs - highly sensitive to heavy-handed servicing (both failed during the air filters being changed!) - but this was the only glitch in many years of modded motoring.
IIRC, my mate had a V3, and the only issue he had was with coil packs - which were alot more expensive to replace due to the configuration/purchase etc.....
