The detectors are of two types, active (now or soon to be illegal) and passive.
The passive type don't actually detect anything. You usually pay a subscription and receive updated files which you load into the device which tell it the location of all fixed cameras. Using GPS the device knows where you are and just beeps to tell you when you are nearing a location it has listed as a camera site in its memory.
The active type are supposed to detect radar and laser signals. Problem is they tend to give lots of false radar alarms as automatic doors etc can set them off. And if you get a genuine laser alert it's probably too late to react.

If you keep your eyes open fixed sites are usually easily spotted anyway.
The mobile vans etc are the only real threat and these days they are all laser as it's far more accurate, which brings us to option 3. Laser jammers actually do work but they most certainly are illegal (something like say an Escort Shifter ZR3). They detect the laser and interfere with it making it impossible for the plod to get a reading. The only way to reliably deal with mobile sites apart from not speeding of course.

There is a new one called Road Angel professional. Its a passive device, and as mentioned above that means it tells you about sites that are in its database.

The difference with this unit, is that it is permanently connected to base via the mobile phone network. This allows live updates as you are moving around....which may give you accurate info on live mobile sites.

I've not tried it or read reviews on it mind. Just saw an ad in the back of EVO

The only thing i'd reccomend is a 'passive' device to tell you of fixed and temporary sites...oh and a jammer.Having a detector that tells you that youre in the process of having your speed monitored(van/handheld) is a waste of time,as by the time you react to the alert and try to slow down, your speed has already been detected.
You could also try hanging a cd from your rear view mirror!...

The way this sh!tty country's going I personally wouldn't bother. Give it five years time and the police will have fixed average speed camera's all over the country like they do on the a14.

Yes, the Road Angel 2 does, I know that much, but unless you get a lucky deflection off a car being checked in front, by the time it has alerted you, you're nicked! That's not an indictment of the RA; all lazer detectors suffer from the same problem!

If you're after a reliable, easy to use stand alone camera warning system, the RA is very good. If you're after sat nav as well, you may as well go for a satnav system with camera updates, won't actively spot mobile cameras, but will alert you to where they're sited officially.

I have an RA2 for sale if you're interested, supplied with its original box all leads etc... and a subscription you can transfer to your name.

PM me if interested.

Default Road angel plus

I use a Road Angel Plus. Very neat and tidy, as it has no wires and is quite small. Most importantly it’s really quick and easy to put in position for use. It’s always best to remove these devices when parked up, and obviously it’s just as simple to remove and store away. I charge it up once a week at the same time as I update from the database (I don’t use it on local, short journeys). Easy to use and customise. Check out the Internet site at HTTP://www.blackspot.com it has lots of info.

Like others have said - don't bother wasting money on a detector version, just get a device that stored the locations in a database like the Snooper or Road Angel. I have Snooper Sapphire and it has many mobile sites plus you can email them any ones you find that are not on there and they add them - so the better the community, the better the warnings. I have done this a few times and they always add them. You will find lots of false readings because of this but the fuzz must have been at that spot at some point checking so I'd rather have a false message and be ready, than be sorry!

Someone earlier mentioned Road Angel Professional, I think it was/is called Road Angel 9000 and you pay a lot of money per month as it has a SIM card in it. You can press a button if you spot an active mobile site and it gets beamed to all other uses....that my friend is the future. If only the userbase could be massive that would be a right finger in the eye of the Scameras.

I've also just seen something called LaserPro Park which is a front end parking sensor (100% legal) that happens to be on the same bandwidth as the lasers the cops use, so unfortunately it blocks the signal till you can slow down. Snooper are now doing a similar one called LaserStar or something. Good Ł300 mind you!

AH !! finally found someone on here who is still admitting to using a laser jammer- sorry I mean a garage door opener !! seems although big talk on here at one time not a lott off folk will either admitt to still using one these days or as I suspect got rid for the fear off them being detected for the more serious than speeding crime itself off jamming police radar ??!!

you still use it most days when driving past camera vans without being bothered by them mate ?? had heard that your number plate was flagged if there laser gun came up with the " jamming " message and if this happened several times then a visit could be in order ?? also as the sighting off these jammers on the car is at times highly critical just wonder how you actually know the device is actually jamming there signal ??

I never said I had one, just that I had read about the new versions that are parking sensors NOT garage door openers. If I had the spare money then I think I would have a LaserStar, but not that flush. I will just have to rely on my Sapphire and brains for now.

Laser Star - Diffuser / Jammer / Blinder

Here it is: that can't be legal! They've even promoted it on its use for interfering with police hand held devices!

The problem with any sort of jammer is that if the camera operator gets an error they still have your number plate, in the past some safety partnerships have passed the information of the vehicle to the local constabulary, who have in tern taken the car in for inspection.

Have a look here news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/wales/2744329.stm

The bottom line is that if you are exceeding the speed limit by a large amount the police will not be able to gain an accurate indication of your speed from the “laser gun”. However if the footage is recorded the option of distance calculations based on simple calculations can still completed and gain the driver points or other options……

Its worth noting that two police officers can estimate the speed of a vehicle and this can be passed on to CPS and the driver can be summons to a court based only on the officers evidence. Convictions can and have been made exclusively on an officers opinion of the speed of a vehicle.

It's a shame those laser jammers can't only operate whilst you've 'accidentally' gone over the speed limit for that road. If you are speeding, and get pinged, an alarm tells you to slow down quickly. Once within legal limits, it cuts out allowing the feds to get a reading. Would certainly be less suspicious.

Maybe oneday.
