are they comon to go on imprezas ??
my rads just split so im assuming its down to the headgasket presurising the system
i guessed it would have to come out due to the location of the heads

Do a compression test and see if one or more cylinders are down before you go and take the engine out, might be something else. Compression tester is only about £20 to buy and you could do it yourself.

i got a comp tester already, just when i had a cossie when ever a rad burst or bowed it was down to the h/g presurising hence me assuming the worst
besides it feels like a flat spot just off boost and a little slower to the norm

head gaskets will probably be fine depending on how long it was driven with a split radiator. The radiators are also prone to splitting due to the plastic end tanks getting brittle with age (constant heat cycling of them) I went through 2 on my classic.
Head gaskets go but I wouldnt say its a common fault, radiators however.....

Engine out job!
It makes sense to do both head gaskets while its out, just to make sure.
I had a similar problem on mine.At first it just lost a little bit of water over a few weeks then it eventually split my rad.I had the motor removed and got it pressure tested. It turned out to be cracked heads on both banks so it was a new motor for me !
