DECAT OR SPORTS CAT

DECAT OR SPORTS CAT
as title says...
which is better? regardless of M.O.T.. i've heard somewhere that some sports cat's can be higher flowing, or just as good as decat pipes.
is this true?

A well designed/made sports cat will outlfow a badly designed/made decat, but if they are equally well designed and made then the decat will have an edge, but probably only about 5bhp at 400bhp!

I made the call to go for a Sports Cat on my car buddy.
This was partly due to come MOT time. I sometimes wish I went the decat route but I am happy with mine.
I have the RCM Sports cat (3" Team Ice System) and it spools up nicely.

Think about it, totally unrestricted or ever so slightly restricted flow... a decat is better if you don't bring MOTs and it's legality into question. Only marginally though if you get a good sports cat, so the choice is yours.

He seemed to think he lost 30+bhp from around 370+ to 340+....

i never thought they were that restrictive,
i am in the same position and was going to go for a scoobyworld or a h&s as i did not think they cpould be as restrictive as that i was under the inpression they would hold back 3-5bhp

If they want to sell road legal packages they have to use a sports cat, I'm sure it's not through choice. Don't get me wrong sports cats are good, but you are paying more for a more restrictive pipe... but that's the law again isn't it... you spends your money you take your chances.

bit of subject a little bit, with all that in mind, if your car has no mot then insurance is invalid right? so if your car has a decat then technically it has no mot, therfore no insurance?
also which is the best sports cat? nso4 recommended scoobyworld ninja, any others?

Once you have an MOT you can't lose it until the next MOT unless stopped by the police and provided with a producer to corret a defect on the car. I know 3 policemen who have decats by the way...

i have a 04 sti ppp and before it was mapped i was advised by one of the best tuners in the country to take it off although it was a prodrive sports cat on it. after the mapping he compared my out put to that of an identical spec car with a sports cat on and there was about 11-15 bhp difference makes a huge difference high up the rev range. the decat was one of the cheapest you could by in 3". so you dont have to spend a fortune mate and im speaking from experience not just guessing........hope that helps a bit.

To stay technically legal, you can't "dis-regard the MOT" if the car is to be used on public roads.
For that reason I went for a Prodrive Sports CAT. May not have got quite as much flow as a full decat and therefore slightly less power, but I really couldn't be bothered with the hassle come MOT time etc.
My 53 plate STi is running about 325BHP with basically the components of a PPP but with a bespoke Mocom Racing - Performance car and trackday products remap and Denso Iridium spark plugs added too. That's good enough for me....for now!

Sports cats lose vertually nothing to a decat, a few bhp max, no where near 15bhp, even prodrive tested the difference with their ppp and found the same, if you look at a sports cat you will see it goes OUT where the cells are, a decat is a straight pipe, that extra where the cells are flows virutally the same as a straight though pipe.

i am with fozz i dont want the hassle come mot time so was thinking about the sportscat but the nija is 299 the tsl 385 and h&s 558 if i remember, why such a big difference in price if they are all 100 cell as the claim, so should be as restrictive as each other, so why nearly double the price and what are the gains of spending all that cash
