quick key question
does anyone know if there is a chip transponder thing in a key for a 1999 uk turbo
basicly i only have on key so rather than getting ripped off by the Main Stealer i was going to get one cut from the original will it work?
and anyone know where i can get a second alarm fob?
thanks

Yes there is.
Most uk cars from 1995 had some form of standard immobiliser, the transponder key was the most common.
You are best of at a main dealer. A non Subaru key to be cut and coded is around 50 quid. Its a specialist transponder chip, so only a few people can do it.
For 75 quid you can get it all done from Subaru, and a brand new fob is 40 odd quid. You can use second hand ones, ebay is roughly 25-30.

I would think yours is the same as my MY00 and has the factory fit alarm with motion sensors and an ugly rectangular alarm fob with a blue Subaru sticker and big black rubber push button. As far as I am aware the key is just that, a simple key, the alarm fob is coded to your alarm. So you can get a key cut anywhere but a new fob would require 'matching' to your alarm.
Kevin
Just found a genuine Subaru spare for the car which is metal only so for sure the fob is all that would need 'matching'.

now i am really confused
c maguire can you do me a big favour and try the key in the car to see if it works as i think that will be the only way to clear this up.
turn off the alarm use the plain metal key and see if it starts if i don't then its a transponder
thanks in advance

Would appear that Joey is right, I tried the metal only key and the car started but died after a second or so. Put the normal key in and started OK, so the metal key must just be for key-cutting purposes.
You learn something new every day.
One thing I would like to know is if I buy a fob only then can I 'match' it to the alarm with some instructions (dealer wants me to book car in, major pain in the ****, and more money too)

If you have the PIN for the keypad, or another wokrking fob, you can program a new one in with instructions on this site. No need to book in at a dealers.
