Default dilemma about upgrading to a newer model

currently have a UK turbo MY00 impreza
thinking about getting a newer model so obviously looking at a BUGEYE at least seen some for around the £5500 mark from traders and have my car plus a coupke of grand i can lay my hands on
is it woth the outlay
same BHP in base model bugeye as my car
insurance goes from £320 to £450
road tax will not be £185 in the bugeye which is what i pay at the moment
am i right to stay with the classic until i can get something like a blob sti or even a bugeye sti???

Agree with all the above (not an STi). Also definitely go for a proper STi if finances will stretch, if not then save up....

Bugeye WRX's may have the same power, but they carry a fair bit more weight resulting in Clio Sports sticking to your bumper all day long!!!
A quick search on the net reveals -

MY00, 215 Bhp - 1235kg = 174bhp/ton
MY01, 215 Bhp - 1400kg = 154bhp/ton
Clio Sport, 172 Bhp - 1090kg = 158bhp/ton

Divide the bhp by the weight in kg and multiply by 1000

Take the HP figure (usually the flywheel figure if know). And the weight in Kg, convert the weight to metric tons.

HP / weight = bhp per ton.

Example 350bhp car weighing 1636kg

350 / 1.636 = 214

214bhp/ton

But don't get too carried away though. While it's a nice metric it doesn't show the whole story. You have drivetrain loss. An AWD car will lose much more power thru the drivetrain than a 2wd car. So even with equal power to weight ratio's it may not be an even race.

You then have gearing. You could have 2 identical cars, but one with a high final drive ratio and one with a low. Over a 1/4 mile drag race or roll race they will both achieve similar terminal/top speeds, however one of them will accelerate faster.

Then there's where the power is made and for how long over the rpm range. Take a Honda 2000, it revs to 9000rpm to achieve it's 237bhp. But for most of the rpm range it makes next to no HP at all and even less torque.

To put this in perspective I've raced a classic Impreza Turbo in my Camaro. The Impreza was 1 up while I had 3 in the car. I don't know there exact mods but def a catback and dump valve but possible more.

On paper, especially with the extra people in my car our power to weight ratio's should have been similar. The actual result was from a 20mph roll he was left bus lengths behind
