I think it is the 2.2 legacy engine. and the 22B engine. There is more metal round the pistons to give it more strength. its hard to tell by just looking at the block. but if you look where the starter motor goes into the block you will see some lines on the casting on the closed deck and they are not there on the std engine. any one with big power and good reliability would pos have one, pos with a 2.33 stroker kit or even new sleaves to make it 2.5. loads of torque. and the internals, but internals are nothing to do with the bloke. they are a lot stronger than the new 2.5.
Take a look at this thread on NASIOC. I thought Spec-c' s had closed deck blocks as in the picture above. Look at the pics of this guys engine and tell me surely thats an open deck block and not even a semi-closed deck block.Spec C 2.0 build. Stroked with STI crank and rods. Pictures - NASIOC
A small number of (mostly early) Classics have a closed deck block: principally the pre-facelift WRX Type-RAs. Early WRXs on their original engine wont have a CDB.
i will have a pop and say its only early v1 wrxtypeRA's, v1/2 stiRA's, and v1/2 sti's, that had the cdb from the factory. then thay started making the semi cdb then the open deck. to save a few pennys.
