Very Impressive Feul Economy

Very Impressive Feul Economy
Last night I drove from Oxfordshire to Somerset.
The journey was 105 miles. When I got there me and my mate went for a spin, where I drove the car very hard to show it off, and the journey was 10 miles. Then I drove home today, took a wrong turn which added an extra 15 miles to the journey.
So, total round trip: 230 miles, with a little hard driving, but the rest of it was done cruising at 60 to 70 mph.
Before I left my petrol warning light was on. I put £40 of VPower in right at the start of the journey @ £1.25 p/l. This equates to 32 litres.
When I got home I still have a good (possibly slightly more) eighth of a tank.
This means that I should be able to get 500 miles from a 60 litre tank, but I've heard people on here say that's just not possible.
My car is a 2003 WRX totally standard.
Anyone got any views on this - I'm pretty surprised.

thats right i filled mine and it took 60 miles for the needle to finally move but when it started it didnt want to stop i got up to 70 miles and it had dropped to 3/4 of a tank but like always ill get around 250 to a tank driving around town

It's worth mentioning that I drove this car like a grandad. On the lengthy parts of the journey gear changes were so gentle, and revs rarely went above 2500 rpm.
Yeah, I'd love to have put my foot down but I thought it would be a good opportunity to see how far I could make £40 of fuel go.

Fill up (did you actually brim it at beginning of journey?) and get back to us with how much fuel was actually used and what mileage was covered.

To those that say it's not possible:
I've just driven 230 miles on 32 litres of fuel, and I have fuel left over. I am certain of this because the fuel warning light was on before I left, and when I arrived home the needle was half way between the quarter mark and the empty mark.
Lets just say I got 230 miles from 32 litres, that still makes, at worst, 431 from the tank. But I've still got at least another 30 miles in that tank with careful driving.
I can't find any logical explanation other than I just drove my Scooby super efficiently. And as I said, never got over 2.5k revs. It took a hell of a lot of restraint I can tell you!
I had a feeling I could get this sort of economy out of a tank, as I was recently caught out with no wallet and had to drive home without filling up. As I always drive my car till the light comes on, and normally then some, I'm quite used to how it behaves, although it's a fair point about brimming it - I can see how this will give results that no one can contest. I'll give it a go next time I drive down there.

Personally, I don't question whatever economy you got. I'm merely making a point about how you're measuring it. Fuel gauges and lights can be very inconsistent (e.g. the light could come on but actually have more fuel than having 1/8 with the light off. It depends on how the fuel gauge works - i.e. on driving style, current fuel usage rate, actual fuel in tank etc.).
I would ONLY make fuel economy statements on the back of calcuating it from full up to brim and using fuel then refilling to brim and calculating how much fuel was ACTUALLY used rather than guessing (which, effectively, you are doing).
I don't mean this aggresively and you may well have got great economy, just that it needs to be calculated properly.
However, you can "maybe" give a good guess at roughly what economy you've got. 230 miles on 32 litres, that's 7 gallons, so 230/7 is about 33mpg so not unfeasible.

I've done the 56mph behind a lorry down the M4/M5 for 200 miles (the rest of the 300 mile journey at 60-70mph) and only managed 29.5 mpg - in my Type R - so reving it's nuts off, well 3k behind the lorry

I did 410 miles on a tank in mine when it was still relatively standard. Unfortunately I had got carried away with the whole "how far can I go thing" and ran out of fuel around ten miles from the nearest petrol station.

When brought the car over to France I did a whole tank of fuel on motorways at 65-70mph off boost and I got 31mpg which I was very surprised about
Never seen more than 19mpg since mind
500miles to a tank would be 37.8mpg that very good going maybe new age non STI’s are much more efficient
