Default tappet type noise coming from the engine.

Hi,

I have noticed a ticking, tapping noise coming from my99 uk turbo engine bay. In particular it sounds like it is coming from the turbo side of the bay. It does it on tick over i don't think it is the turbo etc.

Anyone had this before?

I know its not easy to say without hearing it but thought i would ask in case there is a a noyotious thing that happens..

Any ideas on how much it would be to sort that tappets if its that?

i had something similar but on opposite side. just noisy tappets. shouldnt cause any damage at all to be honest.

from the turbo side it may be an injector. idea to try is get a metal screwdriver, pop one end on each injector and t'other on your ear. have a listen for any noise difference as they generally tick in my experience.

Thanks,

Are the adjustable Tappets that you can do at home or is it a garage job?

Are the injectors on the side/bottom area of the block on the left?

not sure about the tappets, but i know you need specialist tool or so i have been told by people in the know.

injectors are on each piston, so two left and two right side of the block. sort of screwed into the short block with little hoses popping out of them if i remember...

Have you checked your oil?

Your oil could be low.

I have had a ticking noise on the right side where the dump valve is located. No idea what it is yet.

Boost solenoid quite often taps as do the injectors, it might not necessarily be a fault.

Plus don't the newer scoobs run solid lifters which can be noisy.

Just spoke David @ API Engines and he suggests it is the injectors making that noise.

Any suggestions on injector upgrades?

Obviously without a proper listen himself He is not making an official judgement but right now, until I get it to a specialist, that puts my mind at rest.

David is a really helpful chap.

Do you need them mate i.e are the injectors actually faulty, these things can just be a bit noisy. I upgraded to PE550s as part of my VF35 conversion and they still tick!

Echo the above: boost solenoids can also be quite ticky!

And yes, David is very helpful!

i don't think the injectors are faulty to be fare.. How would I tell? Woudl it be a didgey tick over, miss firing etc, loss in power?

Also, If it was the boost solenoid, would i hear the ticking noise on both sides of the engine bay??

Thanks.

Yes, depending on the magnitude of the fault, you'd probably get a misfire or some impairment in the car's running. I would have thought a CEL code too! . Best to speak to David for definitive ways of diagnosing! If the noise is just that, not worth replacing them.

Solenoid on your car located on driver's side suspension turret. So noise should come from there if it's that.
