This is a common problem with road tests and in particular long termers. I got a serious hump with Autocar when they managed to only get 38mpg out of their Civic diesel. You have to drive it with a total disregard for fuel economy to get that kind of mpg. I just refueled my Civic after getting 63mpg in a mixture of town and motorway driving and that was worse than usual.

Ultimately, you have to make a choice to either fully commit to ecnomical motoring or not. If I hammered my Civic I reckon I could get the economy down to low 30s. The same driving in the my old STI would probably return 15mpg. In that case it doesn't make any sense to make the switch unless you do a ludicrous number of miles.

I drove a demonstrator which was showing 27mpg total average when I got in. 20 minutes later after a 'normal' drive it was up to 34!
Turned out it had been started from cold repeatedly, left to idle then thrashed "To show 'em it was quite nippy" so I deduce it'll be OK real world!!!

Edit to add: I once got 8mpg in my last MY03 STi on a full tank so 27 is fine by me
