Prices of late classics going up?
With this whole car tax issue for post 2001 cars, has anyone noticed any rise in value of late classics? I've noticed a few threads more than usual from people wanting to buy classics, especially the later models.
I have had two non solicited offers on my car too (MY00). Is it worth hanging onto as an appreciating asset?
I've seen swingeing depreciation in 05/06 models too.

I've not noticed anything but then again not really looked to much into it, more relief for me really because faced with a huge road tax bill I think it would have to go.
Being £185 a year it makes it more of an ideal choice of second car than ever now. I don't mind it being parked up for periods of time through winter or even during the week when running the small car to work, mine works out at £11 a week these days tax/insurance/mot if it turns a wheel or not. I would like to think this could help boulster the value even with fuel costs.

I am of the opinion that the insurance has gone up on classics recently.
A quote on a standard (non WR) RB5 was £750 which was the same as a modded MY03 STI.
A mate has just had a quote on an (non WR) RB5 and his was £100 more expensive than a JDM newage STI.

My insurance is the same at £640 with extensive mods. That's withoutspending more than 20 mins shopping around.

I think they have come down a lot quite recently.
My W-Reg MY00 with 100k and some nice mods, until recently I thought it was worth 4k easily.
Now, looking at some 99-00s that have been struggling to sell - I think mine is worth 3-3.5k tops.

Totally agree.
Prices have plummeted in the last 9 months.
My low mileage MY99 with a tad under 320bhp was worth, I reckon, £5500 a year ago.
Be lucky to see £4000 for it now. And I begrudge selling spomething for less than it's worth. And I don't think the current market truely reflects the cars worth hence I'm not gonna sell it. So let the mods begin again. It's just not worth selling!

Example being i was looking for a V5/6 Type RA this time last year, prices were around £10K ...from what's selling/sold on PH that figure is now closer to £8K

imo they keep on falling and will do for a while yet, other than fuel and tax i thikn the main issue is people who aare selling are letting tem go for too little as they need or want to get rid which is haveing an overall effect on the market price. i paid ok money for mine at the start of the year but now as its a highish millage but on a new engine and clutch i dont think i woul dget more than 3.5k if i am lucky
at that point i might as well keep it as a play toy as the money that it has cost me to put it right will be a complete waste. so may as well chuck more at it and get a 6speed and 2.5 ltr done over the next year or two

i think what he means, is that the tax for classics isnt going up, but the newage taxes are....so people would be more inclined into buying a classic over a newage to save money on tax

Yeah, classics are really getting on now so only the true classics (i.e. low mileage and unmolested 22Bs and P1s etc) will be worth anything. It's only £200 difference, which if you can't stomach then you shouldn't own an Impreza.
All cars have plummeted in value of late, except the exclusive models, thanks to the economy in general. If newage prices drop, then classics will be negatively effected as well, as few will buy an older car for more than what they can get a newer one for the sake of £200 a year.

Imagine, if you will, a MY00 Classic Impreza £200 Car Tax - then align it to a MY01 Impreza £450 Car Tax.
Both cars are identical in mileage, condition, history - both are priced at £2000.
It doesn't take an intellectual to know that the Classic will sell for £2000 - the BugEye will not sell (probably the car is worthless as over 5 years of ownership you will have to pay an ADDITIONAL £1250 tax!!) ..... I would be so bold as to suggest that the MY01 BugEye would have to be broken for parts.

Everytime I call the guy I either never get through or don't have calls returned
Late classics have over the last few years (IIRC) have in general been worth more than early bugeyes, thats BEFORE this extra tax comes into place.
Classic prices may well have dipped a bit since this fuel thing, but not as much as newer shape Imprezas. The depreciation on the cars only a few years old is phenomenal.
Just MOT'd my car a few days ago, flew through it. All I've spent is money on an oil and air filter and an oil change. If you get a good car and look after it Imprezas don't cost much at all to maintain. If this tax thing goes ahead I can see the best cared for classics being quite sought after. Yes things can go wrong on classics but they won't lose several grand in depreciation in the first year. For the life of me I can't see why anyone would want a new one?
