Anyone watching Topgear (new impreza vs evo)

TBH did clarkson really say anything that wasn't already known?
the evo has been a more focused driving machine for a good few years
it also reliese heavy on electronics (although so does this new impreza)
the STI is always tested against the top spec evo which has always had more power but cost a lot more and normally lost out as a result.
if anything the test lap proved that the STi can still keep up and it was quicker than the WR1 which is a essentially a prodrive version and at around £5K less than the WR1 and £7K less than the EVO thats not bad going.
Just goes to show that the new suspension set up and chassis are a lot better over the old car
wait till prodrive bring there packages out and i think the FQ360 will be getting scared.
the colour of the STi didn't do it any favours either IMO

The thing that is giving the new car a hard time is its looks. I dare say you can tweak the suspension to alter the handling by up grade springs, ARB and so on but if the car looks like a third country import (a Hyundai for example) you are onto a looser..........the Evo looks like a better car IMO.
The fact the Impreza was marginally faster around the track is a tenuous point, the change in wind direction could alter the lap time by that amount and in truth they were pretty much even in performance. It is down to cost and looks, one car is better looking and the other cheaper. Why subaru have not tried to sale the Saloon version of the car over here is a mystery to me, chuck bigger wheels on that and a nice Sti style spoiler on it and you would have a true successor to the car we have all come to admire............

Couldn't agree more Scoobyspanners, the new car is one of the most butt ugly vehicles I have ever seen and I don't care how fast it is I will never own one for as long as I can see.
The old cars looked aggressive and purposeful if not beautiful, this thing just looks like the b*****d child of a 1 series BMW and a Hyundai i30.

so if you had the money to burn, truthfully, who would by the scooby?
just about the worst colour subaru could have provided, looks horrible, made you cringe at the understeer and looked like a dogs dinner next to the evo.
that said it was the wankiest feature clarkson has ever done, putting a 360 evo against a std sti (which unless i heard wrong was apparently powered by a 2 litre engine???) hardly a fair test.
i do know where my money would go though

Thought they seemed desperate foe the X to be faster, however, there's a post on MLR with RC Developments testing an Evo X FQ360 and they are suggesting it is down on power according to the 360 claims of Mitsi

I went to the dealers to look at the new STi, then to look at the Evo X, and based purely on looks and presence I wish I could afford the Evo. I can't afford either really, but if I could they are so close on performance that looks may just swing it. I'd have to drive both to really be sure, but on aesthetics the Evo is leagues ahead.

The UK spec STI has the 2.5l engine.
The evoX is a bigger, heavier car,, oh and by the way, anyone seen a evoX wrc? or a pwrc? or any rally evoX in anger? (apart from the zero car at rally japan)
I love the scoob for it's rally herritage. I wouldn't call any scoob a beautiful sculpture, like say, some Aston's or Ferrari's.

If there was a decent looking saloon available as well then they would be heading in the right direction as those new customers who want a pig ugly hatchback can have the hatchback while the rest of us can buy the repleacment for the car Subaru have already sold us.

The evo is so ugly compaired to evo 5,6,8,9 anyway and as for the scooby ! what were subaru thinking ? it must have been designed visually by Stevie Wonder.

Cant believe he thought the suspension was to soft, if it had been hard he would have slated it for that too and his bloody techno fear and over exageration really pisses me of... other than that i respect his reporting.
To an extent i can understand why he hates the bmw idrive but the stis choice of maps and dif set up doesnt take a rocket science degree to operate... wot a ****.

Once they sort out the roll and introduce a nicer sound to it, the STI will be fantastic. I really liked driving the new one and it has a launch which made me swear out loud. Not even an Esprit turbo had such a fast start off the line in my experience. The only thing about the car is that it rolls too much. Better suspension, thicker roll-bars are all it needs. Prodrive will see us right and I might just have one in 2010.

People still make me laugh on this one
To start with, the new evo in the flesh is butt ugly, the new STi looks butt ugly in pictures but considerably better in the flesh.
The mitsi is considerably more expensive than an STi (about 4k if you buy the top end STi to the bottom end evo), both weigh in at about the same weight, the JDM version is a completely different beast to the UK car (more power and quicker ) and anything that has FQ in it for a mitsi is "tuned" already v a standard UK STi.
The new STi is a far better car than its predecessors, looks better (it grows on you like any subaru does) doesnt look dated like the (really old) cars and beats the tuned old prodrive cars without them being tuned now
Welcome to the future, and its looking good
