Had a lap around Oulton with a touring car driver - went around that track like you wouldn't believe, and the noise!!!!! was just something else.
The driver said to me for a standard car they are superb - high praise coming from a BTCC driver!
Edited - this is the guy, absolutely mental...

Might be a different matter on a bumpy b road though.
With regards to straightline my Classic was pushing 260 ish and would imagine it would annialate it from a standard start but once these get wound up boy do they go!

TOPGEAR Website review (I know how everyone thinks their reviews are always correct )
White thrash
'Tis the season for special edition hot hatches.
A few weeks back we drove the Ford Focus ST500, a limited edition of Ford's hot hatch distinguished solely by a new paint job, and now Vauxhall has had a go at tarting up the Astra VXR with this, the Nurburgring Edition.
In fairness, unlike the Focus ST500, the VXR Nurburgring Edition does feature at least a minor mechanical difference from the stock Astra VXR: a Remus Sports Exhaust developed by Vauxhall's BTCC race team.
Other than that, though, it's just an Astra VXR with white paint, white wheels (which we like) and silly chequered decals (which we don't). Oh, and you get a few bits of extra carbon fibre and a numbered plaque on the inside.
The two-litre engine still produces the same 237bhp but, given the VXR's already lairy road manners, it's probably a good thing Vauxhall didn't decide to ramp up the power any further.
The Astra VXR Nurburgring Edition costs £20,995 - £1,100 more than the stock Astra VXR. Of course, you could always save the extra and spend it on a trip to the 'Ring to get a proper bootlid sticker...

I went out for a lap with Mr O'Neil and it was a brilliant experience.
In answer to the OP - You should'nt be worries at all, but you will have to work hard to see him off.
The Astra VXR is'nt as bad as you might expect, in fact, IMHO it's a very capable car indeed.
The 'ring edition looks great, it's just ruined by the stickers.

I reckon you'd have to risk a jail sentence to pull out any meaningful gap. In the dry there will be nothing in it and in the wet you should be banged up for life if you do what's required to prove you have the bigger *****.

Having driven the VXR and numerous other 200+ bhp hot hatches though, I would suggest that in anything other than a Scooby or Evo over 280, you'd be right if the conditions were dry and the cars were rolling. There would be little difference.
From a standing start, though, FWD is hampered by the fact that the ECU has to rein in the torque in the first two gears to preserve as much traction as possible. By the time it got it's purchase and into 3rd where the ECU can release the reins, the 4WD car would be so far ahead, it would be game over.
The margin in the wet, however, is rather bigger and more demonstrable without being silly! I drove an Astra SRi with 150bhp in the wet and even it struggled! The VXR was, frankly, a bit of a liability!!

Friend of mine has an ordinary VXR, running with a few bits n bobs and a blue fin remap, just under 300bhp. Gorgeous looking car, and really nice to drive, comfy etc, however, It really struggles to put power down in the damp. Floored in third gear at 40mph, it just spun the front tyres. even understeering in fifth on slight bends with the foot down. On a stetch of damp duel carrigway from 10mph up to 70ish, I was easily faster, before my car was mapped, completely down to his first couple of gears being completely useless. Haven`t been out in the dry in it yet (Mainy because this is England and its never dry!) I`d imagine it would be much better then.

This review says it all really, not sure whats the vauxhall envy about on scoobynet...
In 2005, Vauxhall's Astra VXR set a hot hatch lap record around the Nurburgring.
And although it's a record that's since been beaten by the new Ford Focus ST, Vauxhall has decided to mark the triumph by releasing the Astra VXR Nurburgring Edition. Better late than never.
The Nurburgring Astra is a step too far. Especially when you consider that, for the £22,000 asking price, you could get yourself a Civic Type R, Renault Megane R26 or a Focus ST with a few grand left over for petrol
