thanks for help so far. i was talking of breaking the impreza i just bought because of the big end knock but i've had only interest for little bits and pieces none of the big stuff, and i don't really want a pile of scooby bits in my garden as i've got enough dub bits. now i've been looking round for engines and i've found an ej20 wrx engine (my blocks stamped ej20). do you know if my sti heads will go straight on to the bottom end with no trouble? i have been told it makes them stronger but not sure if it's true or not?

Your STi heads will fit onto a WRX bottom end no trouble - wont make it any stronger though - the better flowing STi heads and more aggresive cams will tend to put more strain on the bottom end, so make sure the doner engine is in good condition.
