What I meant was , few people would pay £10 to subscribe to an unproven site that they know little about. I think if simon started charging now for the privilege of using this site, then wthout dobt a lot of people would be willing to pay.
I remember when this was suggested when phil was running scoobynet 1, thre was no question that everyone was willing to show support when it looked like it might be financially doomed.
dont know if that is still true, as the site is thriving by all accounts.

Probably right, but last time I mentioned this to SDB, I was amazed with how much rigor he stated that would be the last thing he would ever want to do. He felt very strong about the site staying free for all.
Somthing I disagree with BTW ... I would say "free to read/register to pos"t (and pay a small fee). But it will never happen while Simon is running the show I think.
Anyway, congrats to him on the 11.000 members... even with a few double etc, that is a lot
PS: The "ghosts" from the past also reveiled that even the old day folks - even though not as active sometimes - still lurk here.

Some evils you learn to live with, some you don't
To be honest: they bother me less than some posts that contain no advertising...
Would I wish they weren't there ? Most of the time, yes. I'm an old "Frankfurter Schule" communications kind of guy.
But...
Do they *really* bother me ? No, not really.
And sometimes (twice a year) I keep refreshing the forum list just to get the banner ad I then need for an upgrade
Consistent, me ? Nah

I perhaps didn't say what I actually meant.
Do the Scoobynet banners bother me?
No
Does internet advertising bother me?
Yes
I would much prefer to have an index of current advertisers so I could look at the banners in my own time. But at least Scoobynet has no pop-ups yet.

Pop-ups ... mhhmm... let's just say that if I were to be a commercial beast or a full time sales weasel, I still would vote *strongly* against pop-ups.
Seen to many **** sites not be be bothered about them
Frankly, I see both your point (advertising when you don't want it is a drag) and the other side (keep this hardware etc running without some commercial support).
I argue about this with my best friend very often (we both studied communication science, and are heavily involved with the internet), and we never get to a "closure" about this one, even though we change roles once in a while.
Deep down I don't like advertising ... otoh, I'm grateful that - partly thanks to some companies - this site still exists.
Really difficult innit ?

Well I lurked for around six months before I decided to register. I was sure I'd have to part with cash to participate in a quality community and I wanted to be sure it was worth it
The ads don't really worry me, but a charge would reduce the alias usage (there are people I know with six or more!) and limit the influx of idiots.
I'm sure Simon will continue offer free access on principle, but I fear the Subaru marque will be increasingly marginanlised as we move to a lowest common denominator format.
How about a Nova forum & a Scoobynet Cruise in Southend?
