Default blew my engine at ford fair yesterday!!!

Went to ford fair with all my cossie mates , done a bit of track time , showed all the fords up then noticed my oil temp had hit 140 deg and oil pressure had dropped to 2bar but by then it was too late. Had the dreaded bottom end rattle .
Bit gutted i suppose but i was happier about beating all the cossie boys.

Anyway i need an engine and gearbox rebuild now as my synchros started to go at the nurburgring a month ago so where do you guys recommend for good builds with competitive prices.

Very temted to go with APi as have heard nothing but good things about them.

You may have beaten your Cossie mates on the track, but at least they went home with healthy engines? Not having a go at you at all here, mate, but was the pleasure of beating a few Cosworths REALLY worth 2.5 grand?
I hope your Cossie mates are sympathetic! Somehow ...................!
Chance (money permitting) for a forged componant re-build?

the answer to that is yes....worth 2.5k all day long.

It was just my turn to have an engine failure.....its the first engine thats ever given up on me in 22 years of driving.

Also the last rebuild was 70k ago so was inevitable really .

**** happens

Good on ya mate; at least you have a sense of humour about it!

Speak to API. Sound advice there. If you're going to be tracking the car hard in the future, suggest you opt for forged internals, an FMIC and an oil cooler in the future!

whats happened has happened and theres nothing i can do about it apart from keeping my chin up and getting it sorted. No point crying over spilt milk it and to top it all im 40 today....what a great present....a 4k ish bill for an engine and box rebuild and why im there a new BIGGER turbo and some bigger injectors and a trip back to bob rawle for a decent map.

I was running about 310bhp before the pop but everyone thought it was more than that as it was very quick for what it was .

has a huge APS top mount intercooler, walbro pump with regulator and pressure gauge, link ecu with link uk map by BR and also prosport, blitz induction kit, uprated oil pump for what it was worth..lol...full de-cat zorst, full defi gauges , knock link and lambda link and the list goes on.

Not sure what happened yesterday ...just one of those things i guess.
Funny thing is that i had a trip to the ring last month, done 800 miles or so,4 laps flat out with no issues at all then do 15 mins at silverstone and all goes wrong!!!!!

Onwards and upwards tho

you will pay more than 4 grand for a decent engine rebuild and another 2k on top of that for a decent box rebuild so i should start saving if i was you.

good you have a sense of humour about it though, and best of luck with it when its back on the road.

Would a 2.5 litre engine be worth a look? Might take the higher bhps with less strain? Dunno, not my area, but worth a look possibly?

i know its too high but that happened after the damage was done.

Round the nurburgring and silverstone my oil temp never goes over 110 deg and oil pressure never below 6 bar . Bottom end failure is what caused these readings i think.

Saying that if i start the car now quickly the oil pressure fluctuates between nothing at all and 10 bar so am wondering whether it could be pump failure of some sort, not sure TBH.

Unlikely if you had the uprated pump......that said, any part can fail.

Any knocklink activity prior to the car letting go? You were probably too busy concentrating on the tack to notice, mind!

A baffled sump would be a good safe-guard when doing the 'ring or trackdays.

Hate to break this to you mate but beating the 'cossie boys' counts for a big zilch if you aint got reliability. I'll bet they were pissing themselves and talking about chocolate boxers etc, etc.

Not really! As a very well respected Ford ECU guru said to me, sme years ago " You must realise that the Cosworth was built to produce 400+ bhp and had to be seriously de-tuned for the production car, whilst the Subaru unit was basically a shopping trolly brought up to a reasonable power level" I recall him having reservations about the strength of the Scooby engine when asked to deliver more serious power levels.
Sure, the Cossie had a few issues early on (eg head gaskets) and the Subaru, in latest STi form at least, is now pretty strong, the Cossie must deserve much respect.
There always was, (and still is?) something special about that "Cosworth" badge on the back of a Sierra or Escort!

sorry lads been away for the night 4 my birthday only to return to some funny comments.
Funniest must be cosworth reliabilty ....is there such a thing????
At least a scooby build can take 70k's worth of canning rather than 2k. Ive had 2 cossies and guess why im back to a subaru....ummm cant think!!!

Yes that was my silver scoob with gold rims giving it large and no i wasnt laughing stock coz it blew within the last few corners so no one noticed.

All my cossie mates were sympathetic too as they are all on there 3rd and 4th rebuilds in a couple of years.....and you want to talk about reliabity....huh.

Only jesting lads....any car can blow up at any time ...its a hazard of tracking a car and ok,i paid the price but do you see me moaning about it.

If i didnt have the money to repair it then it would be a different matter

Also as john D said cosworths deserve respect and are a great car ...thats why ive had 2 of them.....im sure at some point i'll have another too!!

That is right. There was a thread on passionford recently showing the difference in the internals between an evo engine and the cosworth engine and it showed just how over engineered the cosworth was. The cosworth engine was designed with touring car racing in mind and back in 1987 they had the engines producing 500bhp reliably for racing

Sorry to hear about the engine failure I've been on track in a type R (Dill's time attack car) and they are a great car on track and because of the gearing they pull extremely well.
