Default Black smoke out the back of an Evo

Hi,
Just a quick question about Evos. I've seen 2 now that when they boot it, a puff of smoke came out the back of the Zaust. One of them was a FQ400 and the other was just an ego mr (I couldn't tell which one) is this just the turbo? Or just people not looking after their Evo's?

Thanks

Alex

Black smoke is overfuelling. It's normally the sign of a big power car It can also be due to a bad map though.

it wasn't the blackest smoke I've ever seen so maybe just big bhp but saying that it could of been both as when the Mr booted it (A1m) straight road, it didn't really go anywhere. The fq400 just vanished.

Default smoke

My 04 Sti dumps some fuel between gear changes when booted and it's running 415hp
so maybe just a tuned motor.

Usually white smoke due to oil leaking from the turbo seals. Black smoke is ok provided it's not too excessive.

Oil smoke is normally blue. White smoke is steam, or water based

Default Smoke

Black = Fuel
Blue = Oil
White = Water

Obviously on start up there will be a bit of condensation in the exhaust so white is perfectly normal as long as it's not in huge quantities.

A bit of black due to overfuelling is also perfectly normal on big power cars.

Blue is bad in all cases..

A very good friends has an FQ400 and that blasts out some black smoke as well! running 436bhp and mapped by owen developments so car has been looked after!

Also another one of our friends has an evo 9 fq360 with decat and thats even worse!!! no mods apart from decat as well

A couple of years back an Evo owner got annoyed on a dual carriageway when I was 100yds behind him in my blob wrx (std.), it was an FQ something or other as I could just about make out a little red bit on the name badge. He must have thought I wanted a race or something as he proceeded to disappear in one of these large puffs of black smoke....

Prior to getting my STI mapped on a partial decat it used to dump large amounts of soot out the back on most gear changes. Now only occasionally when giving it lots of beans with a full decat and ECUTEK. Normally get a huge pop with it too

Big black smoke when nailing it is normal, often see that when your motor is on the Rolling Road.
