Sampling my scoob for a game
Hi guys and girls
Had a request from one of our sound guys to sample my car for the game they are working on.
First I'm well chuffed that the guys appreciate the wonderful sound my car makes
Secondly though, is there any chance I may damage my car? they want me to hold 1000 2000 etc revs each for ten seconds, now lower revs I don't mind but not shore about holding at 6000 for long especially several time as I doubt they will get it firs time. Don't think I have too much to worry about but just thought Id check to see what you guys think ....lol just thought, you think I should charge for the fuel?

I'm hoping they will model a scooby look-alike too, they havent yet.
Cheers

when the engine is not carrying a load, i.e. its not in gear driving, if you rev it so the revs go up and down alot then that can unbalance the crankshaft, or so i have heard, but if u rev it and hold it at a certain rev it should be ok for a short period of time.

well im going by what my tutor told me last year in college. the way he described it was that if u rev it lots when your not in gear its putting un-nessecary strain on the crank with no load to balance it out.
kind of like if you pedal really fast on a bike that has a wheel lifted from the road, then suddenly stop pedalling, you get the momentum of the pedals and crank against you feet which are no longer pedalling and it gets a radical change of speed, the crank wants to carry on spinning but your feet do not allow it.
does that make sense? im not sure how true it is but its just what i've heard...

This used to be a problem on Spitfires V12 Merlin. The Merlins crank is huge however.
Spits have a small rad intake (fine at 300mph) so do not like being kept on the runway and the cranks can warp which is not much fun on takeoff with 60 gallons of AVGAS resting around 6" above your legs.

I bet you work for Frontier Developments? I heard they were planning to try and record cars in neutral. Not the way to go mate. I've had success recording Impreza's both on the track, and on Dynapacks (easy for revbands - but you can't record decelerations), whichever way the car simply has to be under load to get the right sound (the engine is working) - whatever the car is.
I'm guessing the Codies team may get involved at some stage in the recording, if they're important....

Just been talking to our lead sound guy, sounds like they are doing some interesting stuff for The outsider I'll see if I can post some car sounds some time later(permission being given of course).

Yeah - I'm the Audio Lead on the Racing/Driving stuff at Codies. I think one of our guys went down to Frontier to talk about vehicle recordings a week or so back. The main thing is to make the engine work, that's how you get the tone. Then you've got to work out where to record etc. I'm doing most stuff on track now, but it takes a lot of time/experimentation/experience to get rid of wind noise etc... it's always 50/50. Am recording a GT3 Lambo next weekend at Silverstone - that's gonna be rather difficult.

Was thinking this morning of driving to a quite road somewhere to get some recordings, but like you say even in a controlled environment with no other cars about you still have all the wind noise and other noises the car makes to deal with, man that must be quite a task sorting all that out, think I'll stick to being an artist

It's not easy - especially now with all of the risk assesments, insurance, health and safety procedures put in your way - more paper pushing, less sound design... Gone are the days of my razzing around the M25 in an S2000 recording surface noises for EA, lol
