Bought my bugeye with 32k on, and my current one with 8k.

I think the most important thing is the car's history... 85k is nothing if the car has been well maintained and has had full services when required.

Mmmmm my 2001 bugeye WRX has 158500mls on the clock.
Up until when I brought it (about 2 months ago) it has been fully Subaru serviced. Its been driven fairly hard by the previous owner (a friend of mine) but is still ok (fingers well and truly crossed at this moment!) it has never been used for track days and I'm happy to take the chance.

My friend used to drive it about 130mls a day on A roads and country lanes so I'm expecting general wear and tear to take its toll.

I've had so much fun with it in the short time I've had it I could only ever recommend buying a Subaru. I think you have to make sure you pay the right price by having a good look round at whats available and in my personal opinion be prepared to pay for its upkeep as it will cost you more to maintain than a bog standard motor!

The second hand market seems a bit flat at the moment so it is probably a good time to haggle the best deal you possibly can on any secondhand car purchase.

What gets me is how some people manage to keep the mileage down. When I got mine last Nov with 45k on the clock I thought I'll only drive this now and again to preserve its condition and low miles. Ten months later and its at 52k. The temptation is too much: just going to get a paper, two hrs later...

Mine had 60k on it when i bought it, head gasket went so had engine stripped and acl race shell put in, 'old' ones looked spot on when they came out.

Ok, settled your thoughts on the big end front and made you worry about the head gaskets now lol.

If it looked good and sounded well with history to match, but it and enjoy yourself.

My three Imprezas have had 7, 9 and about 70,000 miles respectively.

The first (standard UK model) had big end failure at about 62k miles, due (possibly) to a faulty oil pump. The second I sold at about 15k, and the third is still going strong.

From what I've read, the most common big end failures seem to be on late classic STI engines between about 40k-60k miles. A bugeye (presumably a WRX) at 85k should be fine IMHO.
