I have an sti type r version 4 2 door in silver - owned for 1 year and no problems touch wood, full UK service history helps if you can find one that has been imported from new like mine i would recormend it.

There are 3 types of 2-door Impreza:
-22B
-P1
-Type-r
Well I think there is no explaining the 22B. The P1 is the UK equivilant of the Type-R, which all type-r's are grey imports but offer higher spec. There are various versions of the type-r (mainly ver3, ver4, ver5, ver6). I once read in an Impreza quide and one of the engineers said thet the ver5 was the best ever made Impreza.

Yes, you linked to one in your first post. They arent 'Type-RAs' though: its a common misconception brought about the unusual applied model number. They have a standard WRX engine and transmission.

Have you checked the transmission code?
Edited to add: youre right Richard; Ive just looked at my old car book and the transmission code (off my landed WRX-Rs) is identical to that in the same MY WRX Type-RA. When I landed them I didnt have as much technical information as I do now. Im still sure that the engine codes are WRX though.

depends what your main purpose for the car is. with reguard the gear ratios personally i find them to be fantastic on my v3 type r which MR subuaru said was the BEST ever made and me thinks hes in a better position than most to judge the only time you might find the ratios a problem is on the motorway and as subarus arnt motorway cars which ever you decide to go for GET ONE THATS BEEN REBUILT BY A REPUTABLE ENGINE BUILDER !!!!
ill say no more..

done the engine myself as i work in the trade, but can be expensive when paying someone else!

No 'Sports', that was a UK 2000cc GL tarted up by IM and sold at a ridiculous price to cash in on the demand for Turbos.....

Just depends if you wanna spend more with a trader/dealer and get a warrantee/supposed piece of mind, or save and buy privately.

I have a Type R and it is awesome! I am also selling it, see "View My Scooby" for piccys. If you are interested, send me a PM for more details. It is a completely standard car, just had a new MOT & 6 months tax put on, and is a dream to own! I NEVER rag it, race it or track it!! Worth a look I'd say!!
