Default Audi S4 V Impreza turbo

I currently have an Evo 6, standard, but had an Impreza turbo , 1999 running 320bhp and the Sube felt quicker.

Pissed off with the Evo now so I'm going to see an Audi S4 tomorrow which has the standard horsepower BUT the fist thing I'm doing with it is remapping it to 330bhp + 375lb/lf torque.

SO

Has anyone ever drove/raced/been in a remapped or standard S4 and can tell me what there like compared to an Evo 6/ Impreza Sti?

I'm not expecting the handling or brakes to be as good as the Evo although I am expecting a better ride.

Should be better to drive on the motorway also

Never been in one or been up against one, but the noise..........

You just can't beat a V8 for noise, even with a flat 4.

I think he's on about the earlier turbocharged model which was a V6, the later ones were a NA 4.2 V8

The S4's have the de-tuned versions (I think the new ones are all Autos?)

2.7 V6 then 4.2 V8

not driven an s4 so i suppose ive got no idea but the point i will make is that the electronics on the audi i had for a while irritated the **** out of me and cut in way too soon as in a spirited drive under hard braking abs would be taking over control. But i suppose after owning an evo you'll be used to the computer driving the car for you

If you're not expecting the handling or brakes to be as good, shouldn't you be looking at sorting those before adding more power?

Nope, I usually do these things ar## for elbow.

Had my Impreza remapped before I sorted the brakes and tyres out.

the s4 is a great car! the older ones came with the same engine as the rs4 just de tuned (the turboed one), the newer ones come with the 4.2 v8, with either manual or auto. brilliant in both. again just a detuned rs4 engine.

top gear did a good review of the s4 a while back, the main plus point compare to the evo or scoob is that is refined, quiet and comfortable on long journeys.

I love mine - it blows my modded Scooby out of the water on all levels except sound

Mine's a 2.7 V6 Bi-turbo. Yes, it's the same detuned engine as the RS4, BUT you can do more with it

But it is no Evo or Scoob - you won't be able to chuck it about, as it's a big car (with HUGE amounts of torque )

All in all, a very different experience to the Scoob and Evo lot.

The B5 S4 is one of a few cars Id P-Ex my Scooby for.

Get a nice MY00 change the twin turbo's for K04's, uprate the Intercoolers and add some H&R suspension mods........Remap you'll be pushing 400 BHP in a nice smooth refined package..........top car.

Took the S4 for a test drive today, very dissapointed in it.

So sluggish, lazy. I know its a big car but it'd need a remap to feel anywhere near the Evo. And I think its slow!

The noise was nice but not that audible inside the cabin albeit I'm used to a screamer pipe!!

I'd need to price RS4 turbo's and injectors + remap to be interested in one now.

I did say that it's a totally different experience to the Scoob/Evo

But at least you know what you don't want now

Good luck with your search!

It's a lovely car, no doubt about that, but don't think big, fat and heavy is the route to motoring nirvana. Don't think that you'll be able to crank up the power and create a comfy version of your old Classic/Evo. Whatever car you get is going to be a compromise. Just make sure that the compromise isn't going to slap you around the face every time you get in the car - it'll frustrate the hell out of you.

I'm not preaching here, but if you think an Evo 6 is slow then maybe you need to take a step back and consider your driving. I remember the original Autocar road test on the Evo 6 - it was so much faster than anything that had gone before, it moved the bar so high that Subaru never caught up. I think it was that car that forced Subaru to build the P1 and even with the big wheels/brakes that car wasn't good enough to take top spot.

From memory (and I have a good memory for these sort of things, before people question my numbers) the Evo 6 hit 60 in the low 4s and 100 in the mid 11s. If that isn't fast enough for you then maybe you need to go for something more extreme like a Caterham where the sensation of speed is so much greater. Even if you're a really good driver you could find that anything much faster than an Evo 6 could get you into a lot of trouble.

Ive just got rid of my Evo VI GSR rolling roaded at 322bhp 290lb/ft, and I didnt think it was all that quick, well it didnt feel that quick, and my brothers completly standard MY98 STi would pull about a car length away from me with less power, and a slightly longer 0-60 as stated by Autocar too.

And as for 0-60 in the low 4 seconds, well I dont know if it was me, but everytime I tried to do a standing start, it would just bog down, I could never get it to launch like I used to get my old scoobys.

Cant be down to my driving(well not all of it) I just couldnt get the hang with my old Evo 6 GSR, I always felt that you could do anything in a scooby, but when you tried it in the Evo, you had that feeling that something was going to break and cost you ££££.

Evo is quicker in the corners and under braking but hasnt got that thump in the back like the Impreza did.
Seriously thinking of just spending a grand or two on it, making it 400bhp and keeping it forever, stuff the wife/divorce/kids as when I washed it to go and see the Audi, it looked stunning.

As above, couldnt have put it better myself. 1st gear in the Evo feels long therefore bogs down when you try and launch it.

My old boy has an MY03 s4 as well which I think says it all - he is older and likes the comfort and not the raw power of the Scooby/ Evo.

Raced him a couple of times, Scooby has the edge, but gotta love em' both!!

What sort of power are they both running?

I've never sat in a remapped Audi but if it could be quicker than a 320bhp Impreza I'd still be tempted.
