Default Carbon Fibre Bonnet.

Does anyone who already has a carbon fibre bonnet have a recommendation as to a supplier for M/Y 99 Classic. Bonnet, scoop and vents.
Thanks.

Id watch out for Seibon Harvey. They seem to be highly regarded, but as far as Im aware theyre still making wet-laid-coated GRP bonnets...

I was saying avoid them, because I believe that they are fibreglass coated with carbon fibre.

Rather than taking what Ive said as certain, Id be more comfortable if youd investigate yourself. Im sure that they were, but now I think about it, it was almost five years since I learned this and things might have changed.....

from my investigative findings GC8 is correct, Siebon bonnets are a fibre glass frame with the carbon skin laid on top

to buy a bonnet completely made of carbon you are gonna be talking probably more than 3 times the cost of a siebon number

they are still way lighter than an ally bonnet though, s'pose it all depends on your budget and what you want at the end of the day

Harvey, i had seibon one a few years back, and tbh it wasn't worth the money. It was heaver than the oem aluminium bonnets and only slightly lighter than my OEM steel.

I believe Neil Robinson, Eclipse Motor Bodies (E_M_B on here), also recently said that every single carbon one he has dealt with has been heavier than OEM Ali ones.

Assume you are thinking of one from a weight perspective, as i cant think of any other possible benefit other than maybe a design perspective?

Thanks Steven. I am happy with the aluminium ones on my three wagons and have never seen the need for the expense of C.F. However, someone I have supplied bits to in Portugal asked for my assistance in sourcing one for his use. As I had no direct knowledge I came here looking for guys that had actually tried them.
Cheers.

The trouble with wet laid / GRP bonnets is that you cant tell whether its the 'real deal' or not, because the heavy GRP is fully clad in a decorative wet laid layer of carbon fibre. Unless you have cut it into sections, of course...

Harvey

I'd be tempted to advise your client that Carbon bonnets can be somewhat hit and mis.

Purely mechanical products like intercoolers, clutches, gearboxes, brakes and the like can have improved manufacturing tolerances etc to improve performance but I'm not so sure about "cosmetic" products.

I've got a carbon bonnet on my bugeye (and funnily enough a spare in Oldfella's garage...but that's another story lol) and I spent a bit of time looking around for one.

From a Cosmetic point of view Seibon kit looks good but were way too expensive and as GC8 says are GRP with CF on top.

I looked at L'Aunsport stuff which looked even better but the price would make my nose bleed

There is also the possibility of sourcing the genuine WRC item

Cumbrian Scoobs :: View topic - What's this?!

Costs would make a nose bleed trivial LOL

HTH

Shaun
